I am interested in knowing what is happening in Sudan. Can someone give me a detailed discription of the aviation industry in the Sudan? How many airlines are operating beside Sudan Airways? Any modernization plans, route structure etc.
What are the potentials? Any update on the infrastructures, Are the airports equipped for night operations and what percentage of them have full navigational facilities ?

BA flies via Ankara, as well as some other airlines : KLM, EK, Turkish, Lufthansa, Qatar Airways, Kenya Airways, Royal Jordanian, Yemenia, Ethiopian, Gulf Air and Wgypt Air.
Khartoum airport has 2980 m long runway, altough I am not sure for navigation and night conditions :confused: . It will be replaced with an new airport situated 30 miles south of Omdurman.

Thank you world for your reply, I was interested to know about locally, how many private airlines are there? What is Sudan Airways's market share in percentage in comparison with other local airlines? What coverage does Sudan Airways have domestically and internationally? What runways are of a solid tarmac or asphalt? Day and night operations? And so forth.

I greatly appreciate if anyone can fill in the details. I hope there are pilots who fly within Sudan and are members in this forum who can shed light on the above information.

Aside from Sudan Airways, there are about three or four other airlines that operate out of Khartoum. Most are those operate Russian a/c.

If I recall, the only other western a/c operaters are another pax company that runs the F-27, one with a 707 that is run for a Sudanese cargo company, and one with a name very simmilar to 'Southwest Airline' - some direction anyway - that operates a 737 and Yak as well. Any other western a/c operators are usually UN contractors.

What is Sudan Airways's market share in percentage in comparison with other local airlines?

Domestically, it seems appears quite equal and certainly internationally Sudan or one of the others mentioned in the previous post.

What runways are of a solid tarmac or asphalt? Day and night operations?

All taxi ways are tarmac and the airport provides operations in day and night operations.

1st off, if you are looking to start up here, BE CATIOUS!, one of the newest companies here had their a/c on the ground 2 years before permision was granted to fly by the CAA. If you are coming in, make sure you have a rock solid contract and good contacts.

your tar strips are

in the west

El Fashier, Nyala and then there is El Geneina that is gravil but it takes C130's, AN12's and I have seen the odd AN74 there

in the North

Khartoum, it is 24hrs and has an ILS on both runways "not always working though but the VOR approach works just fine" El Obeid, this is also 24hrs but the VOR was recently replaced and is still in the test phase, is 8deg out and 3NM from the old VOR so dont attempt the approach at all!

In the East

Kassala, (not for private use), Damazine, (old tar with pot holes, caution!) Port Sudan, ILS and VOR

In the South Malakal, Juba, Kadugli and Heglig (oil field owned, need prior permission to land there) all have VOR or ADF stations but as they do out here, they dont often work, all strips are day only except Juba that may be used for medevacs but the the time it takes to get the show on the road means you will be landing the next morning anyway.

There are about 450 odd bush strips around and a few good gravel strips as well, all of the above have fuel but at most places you will need to get prior arrangement for the fuel.

at the moment the cargo market is pretty much taken care of as is the scheduled route for pax but the biggest scope at the moment is UN type contracts. At the moment, the UN allone has 54 a/c operating here from C208's right up to 2 MD83's and more choppers than you could count on all your fingers and toes.
