Just got a call from CASA in the last week.

My ASIC card police check has to be paid for but my credit card has expired. I have had my ASIC card for OVER a YEAR now.

Told them that my card is no longer current, so they sent me a form so I can attach a cheque or money order, however no indication on how much I have to pay them! Crickey, if they did that with everyone they would be in a world of pain.

Well maybe if you applied for yours a little earlier next time......:=

Of course it wont be long and we will all be in the que again for a new one, yours will be fine until after the rush has dwindled again.:D

Not only be prepared to pay for the ASIC, but also an "admin fee" for CASA taking their time to realise that your credit card has expired, this will somewhere in the order of $500, plus 25 cents for the phone call, unless they called you on your mobile. I also failed to mention the cost of a replied paid envelope, sent via courier. :hmm:

Just give them your old credit card details again, and see how long it takes them to srt it out again :ugh: :E

I can not recall exactly how long my ASIC took to arrive, but it was not excessive and they did charge me correctly.

I did fill it out properly and sent it in early etc etc......so I can not complain. In fact with the few times I have had to deal with them they have been pretty helpful both in registering a/c and license issues. The ASIC was no different so I really cant complain.:D

Mind you I hear of some new rules changes for parachute ops that conern me so off to see the NPRM's:eek:

Applied for my ASIC in October 2005, eventually received it end May 2006: had ticked all the right boxes, was never asked to resubmit, yes - AFP did "lose" the paperwork at one stage (seemed back then to be stock CASA response).

Credit Card debited Nov 2006, receipt received mid December.

Nothing unexpected in the whole process.

Have need of an MSIC (Marine etc) for the job that pays me, not the fun aviation part.
Used my ASIC and Federal passport as identification and the process was almost blindingly quick, unlike the original issue of the ASIC, almost 300 days.

I'm wondering if I can pull the same trick in reverse at the ASIC renewal time?

Might be interesting to keep an eye on it.:ok:

Just out of interest, Pharcarnell, how much for the MSIC application?

Is an ASIC really necessary for a student pilot? My instructor says as long as I don't walk within the blue lines at some airports, I don't need to bother with applying for an ASIC. Is this true?

You need ASIC to fly solo into a security controlled airport. When dual you are covered by the instructors ASIC.

Depends on the student. YPPF is now security controlled so you need an ASIC or escort with someone with one (as bentleg suggested) if you're wandering around there. Same if you were to go solo to YMIA or something.

what about students who didnt receive their ASIC as yet? Are they allowed to do preflight without instructor and go SOLO?

Thanks

You can't sign the maintenance release for the daily inspection until you are PPL.

Solo circuits at a non security controlled airport - no issue

Solo circuits at a security controlled airport - not sure but I guess it would be OK with the instructor watching.

Solo NAV to a security controlled airport away from home field (usually after GFPT) - you need an ASIC.

If you had an ASIC you could walk over it, if you didn't then you had to walk around it.
If any confirmation was required to prove that the lunatics are now running the asylum, we now have it!!:ugh: :ugh:

Not even the Monty Python team could have dreamed that one up but you must admit that it would have made a funny sketch!!:E

Somehow for me, the few examples of:

"yeah, they didn't take toooo long, and only charged me once" :D

don't even remotely balance out the crushing volume of:

"lost the application, took over a year, got charged twice, can't go flying 'cause no ASIC yet, now I need one - now I don't, fee is inflated etc." :ugh:

Now we have a new and improved model of the "CASA ASIC shambles" - it's called "Please send us a blank cheque" HA HA HA HA HA HA
This whole thing remains a shining example of CASA at their finest, doing what they do best. What a joke from start to finish. Would anyone like to guess how many actual real security threats have been averted (phew!) thanks to it all? Gee I know I feel safer at work now... (That's what it's all about after all - not making $$$$ and taking a bow on the public stage).

(Where's that smilie of the guy barfing gone to?) :yuk: :yuk:

What worries me about the whole ASIC thing is the fact that we now have around 10,000 PPLs with what is effectively one of the highest security passes in the country, in terms of where it will get you. They do not NEED access to major airports... but they have it. I know of someone who wandered around the Red Rat's head offices at Mascot with their CASA-issued ASIC as ID, not a QF company ID. Yet this was waved through, no questions asked. So suddenly you have all these guys who do not NEED this sort of access, but they have it. If someone wanted to go cause chaos, well.... :ugh:

Who said our aerodromes aren't more secure post ASIC - of course they are!

Last time I was at YBAS the security guard copied down all the details off my ASIC into a little book before he would let me back through the gate.

As I was waiting, I noticed another gate not 10 m away - propped open! (Pity I didn't notice it before I rang the magic number.)

I pointed this out to the security guard - but he drove off and left it open.

Dunno mate. them that told me I had to have one, coughed for it in total.
But I understand you can get it processed at the local post office.

Highly secure methinks, NOT!:=
