Took this pic yesterday. Got these details from another source. Been in YMMB since December 29th with flat tyre.

The Dornier 228 at YMMB is destined for Airlines of Tasmania and will take
over from one of the Cessna Titans currently operating that service.

New Reg will be: ATZ It only has a Ferry Permit at the moment.

Flat tyre - The pressure release valve in the wheel rim is faulty, not the
tyre itself, they're awaiting spares to come from overseas at the moment.

Won't go into service for at least 5-6 weeks (I'll tip 10 weeks) as Pilot
training and CASA problems to be fixed up first. Its also over 5700kg so
it has be approved also by MAC which will only come after CASA does their
thing. The operator faces a long uphill battle with CASA for sure.

Inside it you will see
big boxes of spares, including two complete engines. But no pressure
relief valve. The pressure relief valve is designed to stop the single
tyre from overheating and overinflating in hot climates after long taxies
and high weights etc., its worked in reverse in Australia !!!

The aircraft is mid life, and is Steam Gauge equipped mostly.

Would I be going too far to say it's almost as ugly as the Shorts 360? :yuk:

Well given that the best Australia seems to be able to do in that sort of aircraft is the nomad I don't think I'd be saying too much about the shorts.

I reckon she looks like a cross between a Nomad and a Shorts 360, :}

GAM's have one up in Cairns too I believe.

I'm not sure what looks worse, the strange fin on the top of the nose cone or the split-system aircon fitted on the fuse..... :}

Thanks for that it's clear now why the BIG nose and the fin on it.:ok:

With all that split aircon ironmongery down the back you'd need a shedload of ballast in the nose and extra vertical stabiliser to keep it all straight.

Veeeery clever zis Chermans.:D :D :}

C'mon people if we are talking ugly aircraft what about the Shorts Skyvan. I remember flying in Botswana when we had a Shorts 360 flying at 4000 and we were 2000 and the pilot of the 360 looked down on us and said "you must be the ugly cousin":} . It is quite unnerving being called ugly by a 360 and means you are pretty much the worst looking on the block. The Dornier is a princess by comparison. Gotta love those swept back wings tips.

it'd be pretty hard to beat the Transavia Airtruck I believe. Have not seen one in the flesh- but just look at the thing.

Looks like someone's strapped a couple of props onto some 146 engines :E

OK so who stole the split aircon system and nose mounted vertical stabiliser then.

Pilots, they'd steal the fillings out of your teeth.:{ :p

rumored to lift almost as much as a caravan. :} Awful ugly though.
Also rumored to be an exceptional short field performer.

Was gonna say Shorts 330 (tad uglier than 360). Will load pic. http://photo.charles.cc/photos/2001.07.12%20RDU%20airport%20pictures/tmbnails/RDU%20-%20ACC%20shorts%20330%20front.small.jpg
Awesome plane despite looks. Think there is one in Alice decomposing.

And a cut up caravan would fit nicely inside me thinks.

Forget the aircon and vertical stab - who stole the doors? Do pax/crew climb throught the luggage compartment?

What's the big fuss about? there are at least 7 dornier 228's flying in Manila. From what i've heard , they are 100% reliable, excellent short-field haulers and does an easy 200knots cruise. I bet they'll be more coming into oz and nz soon when prices of used ones become more realistic.:ok:
