Australian Flight Schools?

Hi all, I am new to PPRUNE so I don't really know how it all works. What I do know is that every pilot I have talked to has recommended it to me for advice on progressing in the field.

At present I am due to embark upon an integrated course at FTE in March but whilst being on holiday in Australia I have realised that I would really like to live here in the future. A highly unlikely prospect if I take out a 60K loan and do my training in Jerez.

I have been advised that the best schools that UK airlines recruit from are FTE, Oxford CTC and Cabair. I was wondering if anyone had any insights into the Australian flight schools and which schools over there have the best reputations. From what I have witnessed so far they all seem to follow a modular approach also.:bored:

Anyhow, I might end up doing my training and then not be allowed to emmigrate for good as they're meant to be pretty strict unless you have a job/have prospects (and we all know the nightmare scenario of the the prospect of having to wait years to get that first job).

So should I just go to Jerez and be thankful I am going to a good school as it is or should I risk coming out to Australia? Any advice would be much appreciated! Cheers

The other thing to watch if you're looking to imigrate to Oz is that they don't count the CPL or ATPL qualifications in the same way they do a University degree when it comes time to look at your suitability as a resident (employment prospects and all that guff).

Mate if you really want to work in australia as a pilot , I would get your licence in Europe, as you have a much better chance of finding work straight out of flying school and work there for a few years !


Not sure how this would effect you immigration though !

Thanks to all of you who have replied. I'm reassured by CP_Adi's reply about the modular integrated debate, that suits me down to the ground. Think I'm going to look into tristar as Melbourne is the place I would hope to move to. Cheers for the immigration advice to trav, think the best people to ask is going to be the consulate or someone like that. In terms of qualifications I have graduated from the university of Sheffield, which is quite a good one back home with a BSc 2:1 degree in Geography, probably not a qualification the government is looking for but still!

I have already been told a similar thing also as to what dxbpilot has advised by a pilot at Sydney airport when i got here and if money wasnt an issue then i'd probably do just that. The thing is if i take out a 60 thousand pound loan to go to jerez then i'm due to be paying back over 550pound a month for the next 12 years! If i did want to move out after that I might be a bit old. Either that or i start selling my bum down town (easy) which i dont want to do! Reckon i'll have to harass the Quantas pilots on the way home for some advice to.

With the right flying school they should be able to help you get a student visa which would allow you to work part time whilst here. Remember that where ever you learn in OZ you will probably end up either in the north of WA or the NT to get your times up. The thing to bear in mind is that after you qualify as a pilot (not sure which level, you will have to check that in the ASCO dictionary) you immediately get points in the imigration points scheme.

The big thing to consider though is that if you don't get in you will have to go and do the JAR course anyway as from what I've heard conversion is nigh on impossible.

Aus$150,000 will buy you a hell of a lot of aviating in Australia.......!!! :p
