Folks,

Some advice please...

GA aircraft lands at a regional airport, and veers off the runway. Runway is closed for over an hour. Aircraft sustains damage to undercarriage but thankfully no injuries.

Should this be reported to the AAIB?

In my own opinion, the answer is yes...

Thanks Mr Kipling,

Does it matter that it was a piston?

Any incident where the aircraft sustains damage is reportable to the CAA, not necessarily the AAIB.

Even if the crew haven't made a report, ATC will have done - end result being the CAA could start asking why they only have one side of the story if no crew report is filed.

This may be covered under the CAA Mandatory Occurence Reporting Scheme (MORS).

http://www.caa.co.uk/default.aspx?categoryid=978&pagetype=90&pageid=6278

5 Applicability

5.1 Category of Aircraft Involved

The ANO specifies the aircraft covered by the MOR Scheme as:
• Any aircraft operated under an air operator's certificate granted by the CAA
• Any turbine-powered aircraft which has a certificate of airworthiness issued by the CAA

In the case of organisations providing a service or facility for aircraft operating over or in the UK (e.g. Air Traffic Services, airfields, etc.) any occurrence meeting the required criteria should be reported regardless of the nationality of the aircraft involved.

This seems to indicate that reporting only applies to piston aircraft being operated under an AOC and all turbine aircraft with CAA issued CofA. Nevertheless, a Mandatory Occurence Report (MOR) will probably have been filed by ATC.
