Hi
Well its not "has". They are evaluating procuring the 777 vs A330/340 as part of the long haul fleet renewal strategy. No decision has been made yet. This is not the first time that SAA have looked at the 777. In fact, they had 4 on order with 3 options (for the 777-200) but cancelled the order. The airframe registrations where ZS-SCA to ZS-SCG.

Are they going to ask for free engines again or will they make a decision?

Talking about the short term, SAA will still go the Airbus way, heard a rumour they are looking at 6 ex Air Canada A340’s plus the 3 x A340-300e returning from Jet Airways for their international fleet in 2007, this will be to expand they routes and to replace the 6 x B747-400’s.
Talking about the long term, it could go Airbus or Boeing……….with a rumour that SAA is looking very closely at the B787 and the government is looking at the A380.

At least Coleman Andrews knew a good aircraft when he saw one - not like the government that is in bed with the frogs!:=

Are they actually expanding or just modernizing the fleet by replacing old with new?

:hmm:

Airbus are throwing in a dozen or so flame retardant cashmere blankets with each of their aircraft as well as monogramed pastel coloured night shades for the cabin crew.:)
