On December 5th, Nicaragua's Direccion General de Aeronáutica Civil ceased to exist.

It is now replaced with the Instituto Nicaragüense de Aeronáutica Civil (INAC), as stipulated in the major recent overhaul of Nicaraguan aviation legislation. The legal reclassification of becoming an "Institute" is significant, since it separtes the entity from the Ministry of Transportation and Infraestructure. INAC is now funded entirely based on profits generated by the airport and air navigation services (7%), as well as user fees, applications, etc. This is a real positive as under MTI, it had to compete with scarce governent funding and attention in an organization primarily preocupied with a deteriorating highway system and a problematic bus system.

In addition, Captain Orrin Watson, current director of INAC will be replaced by on January 11, 2007 by Captain Carlos Salazar Sánchez, following the inauguration of president-elect Daniel Ortega (on January 10th). Captain Salazar was the Operations Manager for Atlantic Airlines, S.A. (http://www.atlanticairlines.com.ni/)
