For PPL does previous x country time count.

Previous time x country was at Tamworth joint military college where a GFPT only was issued. At the college they did 1.9 hours solo x country.
This person has been told by an aero that the 1.9 hours x country at tamworth does not count.

This person has also been told that he has to do a five hour nav before being issued with a full PPL and the 1.9 he has previously does not count.
Does anybody know if this is correct?

The CT4's are VH reg aircraft so there's no reason why it shouldn't count.

Sounds to me like they are trying to bleed your mate of more money..

Agreed that it sounds like they're trying to get more money from him.

Btw, what is a "Full PPL"? Is it one where there are no airspace restrictions, or is this another way of saying PPL and not GFPT?

A full PPL??? Bit like being half pregnant. In reality you can have a Nil restrictions PPL as in airspace so I guess a Full PPL is an apt description.

Now my understanding is that on a GFPT (and I never bothered I went straight thru) you are distance limited from your home airfield, and thats like 25nm so how can you do a x country nav in that area?:=

So in my opinion the time on GFPT can not be counted x country. If its only 2 hours of it, do a nav, it will be good fun.

The official wording says the requirement is "5 hours cross country flight time as PIC". The 1.9 should count to that total of 5 hours. If it is in a log book it should count.

CAR Part 5 talks about time that can be credited.

I think there is a requirement that 1 or more Navs needs to be 150NM+ but I cant find that reference anywhere in the official stuff.

You're right, I can't remember the exact distance the 150+ seems to trigger my memory as well.

But the solo GF Nav at Tamworth does definately count towards the 5 hours.

If you hire a testing officer and sit the test, then yes it would count, however if you sit a structured course such as what is offered these days, then unless the flight was logged by an instructor and placed in your progress file, or the CFI of the millitary academy sent your flying records over to the CFI of the aero club, then they could be discounted against your PPL progress!

Thanks everybody so far for your input.
I did hold a grade 2 instructor rating over 10 years ago and previous x country time solo did count then so I dont see why it does not now,
especially when this young guy got through the hell in TAMWORTH.

Yes the full PPL I referred to was with all restrictions lifted ie CTA etc
Since then I am not full bottle on the regs so if anybody else has any info please write.

I guess your mate has got to find something to do with his time now that he has an almost year long wait b/w courses on his hands, assmuming he/she is RAAF/RAN

4SPOOLED.... from what I can find out you are close to the mark.
It turns out that because the testing officer at this aero club is not actually testing this guy, IE NOT HIRING A TESTING OFFICER ....when he completes his five hour solo x country he is issued with a PPL.

It could be that since the school is not authorised to train students for PPL, it could invalidate it for requirements purposes. Either that or their trying to bleed him. Tell him to keep his feelers frosty. Any sign of dishonesty - tell him to get out of there fast.

I've also heard of schools that hold your training records if you transfer to other flying schools.

What did the aeroclub say ?

Slightly off thread but........... what is the definition of solo cross country in reference to CAA PPL FCL parlance?

e.g. - How far out from the take-off airfield must one travel for the flight to be deemed "cross country"

Landing at an away airfield i believe in command. Then you need to have at eleast one nav in excess of ex amount of hours in duration or at a distance away from the base airfield.

It will be in the CAO's under issue of PPL requirements.
