Lufthansa Technik to expand Malta operations
Lufthansa Technik will be expanding its operations in Malta, building an enormous hangar that will be able to host the Airbus A380, the largest passenger aircraft in the world.
The investment of millions of liri will be unveiled on Saturday evening by the chief executive of Lufthansa Technik in Malta and investment minister Austin Gatt, maltastar.com is informed.
Sources told this e-newspaper that the new hangar will be built at Park 4 of the Malta International Airport. All operations of the Lufthansa Technik Malta will be moving to the new premises, limits of Siggiewi.
Lufthansa Technik to start D-Checks
The project was being processed through the lengthy bureaucratic system within Lufthansa Technik International and the German government. The go ahead was given a few days ago.
At the new hangar, Lufthansa Technik plans to start performing D-Checks. These are calendar-based inspections on aircraft which take place every six to eight years depending on the type of aircraft.
In these the aircraft is fully stripped including the removal of all paint and closely inspected, particularly the airframe, which is examined for cracks and corrosion.
This is a fantastic opportunity for the skilled workforce of the company, said one employee of Lufthansa Technik who is looking forward to see his company expand.
Until now, Lufthansa Technik Malta is concentrating on C-checks for aircraft of the Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 family. C-checks are also done of a calendar basis, on average 18 months, during which certain modifications are carried out, and another inspection is done.

Lufthansa Technik has started operations in a joint venture with Air Malta in January 2003 and employs around 120 workers, most of which are Maltese.
At the moment Lufthansa Technik have a hangar in Park 2 of the MIA, which is able to have two production lines that can be operated simultaneously.
