On last nights "5th Gear" motoring show, they towed a 747 using the V10 VW Touareg.

However the 747 had twin engines on the inboard pylons(aka B-52 stylee) and fuel tanks on the outboard pylons...

The jumbo had large 'VW' logo's over it so I guess it was something VW comissioned for the stunt and that the aircraft is some sort of decomissioned film 'extra'...the one at Kemble maybe?

Anyone know the story behind it?

AFAIK, the aircraft was modded for the latest James Bond film hence the B52 engines. Its located at Dunsfold, not Kemble.

Was done a couple of weeks ago and was in the papers last week.

Was a pretty modified Touareg I believe, and I assume the 747 has had a few things taken from it - though they said it weighed in at 150 tonnes.

I have seen people pulling several large a/c types for charity before, so it can't be ridiculously hard, once you get the thing rolling.

AFAIK, the plane itself was fully fitted, nothing modified except for the engines, which had been modified for "Casino Royale". The VW had a different clutch fitted and extra ballast loaded around the bumper area and behind the driver to bring the total weight up to around 7 tons.

No, the clutch, the suspension, the engine and all other mechanical parts were standard. They just changed a few body panels to make it look like the latest model and added the weight as ballast.

Thanks all :ok:

....the thread quoted above has all the answers. I think 5th Gear just tagged along for the day... it was a VW stunt first and foremost!

Did you not know it's Branson's trial to cut fuel usage and emissions at LHR ?

Use a VW to tow to the point of departure. ;)
