I keep on hearing about how the 2010 Soccer world cup is going to be the best thing since slice bread for airlines in SA. Is that going to be the case?
My experience is that with all of the major events like the Olympics and other world cups is that most of the Pax fly in on package deals, which carry a low yield, they only fly in and out, so you get busy a few days before and a few days after the event and nothing much in between. The other well-documented effect is that the businessman (who pays the highest yield) does not travel during these events; they will usually do their business before or after the events. The other turists that do not care for the soccer usually stay away as well. I say that apart from the exposure the airlines do not benefit from such events as much as we would like to hear.

The airlines amongst other tourist industries will definitely
benefit from the 2010 World Cup Tournament! Think about it,
the teams will have a base somewhere in SA, and their group stage
matches will be all over the country. So when the teams
travel to play their match somewhere else in the country,
away from where they are based, the teams fans travel too.
Granted not all will travel by air, but a majority
of them will. They are prediciting somewhere in the region
of a few hundred thousand tourists during that period ( the tournament
has a duration of approx 1 month).
There will be a huge increase in airtravel not only into our country
but within the country too!
With regards to business being conducted only before and after
the tournament I would have to say is incorrect. All of the sponsors
use this period to do lots of business and to sign more deals and contracts.
Remember that this is the biggest tournament the world has ever seen
and with that comes huge business! All sectors of trade and commerce
will benefit from this in huge preportions.
Just ask Deskjocky what plans his airline has or are busy
making to try and capture some of this lucrative trade that will
be on offer for 2010.
Brace yourselves boys, this is gonna be a huge event! :D

This gain to airlines is assuming of course there'll be ATC's controlling the skies...! The exodus continues - and with ASA a free for all now, ATNS had better start working seriously on a retention scheme. Besides getting paid peanuts and effectively freezing ones salary after 12 years service, it's a great place to work!!

I remember that after the Korea world cup Korea airlines stated that the impact was not as big as they were wishing for. I also know that during the sydney olympics or front end dropped in loads.
The one thing about the internal travel is that most if not all of those tickets will be part of the whole package, so the yields for the airline will be low.

An outsider speaking: The sector that I expect to do best out of this is specialist/exec charter. They will be signing up specials to move the teams around. Some of this might be done by Link and SAX using regular craft and crews but not on scheduled services.

The one thing that you can be sure of is that, during and post event ALL carriers will declare:

They had a VERY successful games
They carried MORE pax than anyone else
They received the HIGHEST compliments from the organisers
They are PROUD to have served their country

Cynical? No - It's just that I've just been involved in commerce for too long and have seen the wheel through too many rotations [pun intended :} ]

I think its fair to say that all of the South African airlines will see an increase in traffic- whether this will be at the cost of other market segments is debatable. We are planning a significant increase in inbound capacity to tie into demand from wholesalers in some of our overseas markets. Plus there is a reciprocal increase to the domestic network as we are common rating most local destinations with Jo-burg- ie whatever we bring in will stay on the SA network. As we are not the official world cup carrier- EK is, we have already held discussions with LH as to how they maximised their revenues during their event- although we do have a code share agreement with EK so its safe to assume that we will see a large portion of their interline traffic too. The other local airlines will also do well out of connecting traffic off of their own partners- provided they have the necessary capacity.

An early indication of whether or not we are in for a windfall will come when the first departure dates come into system range in 2009.

I’m just hoping that all the controversy dies down in terms of the local organising committee and we actually have a world cup at all!

I think there will be a world cup in SA no doubt. I personally think that the economic windfall from the cup in not going to be great. Airlines will see an increase in traffic, at low yields it will last for 3-4 weeks and then it will go back to normal loads at normal yields. With regards to the LHR traffic, you cannot get a bum in a seat now nevermind when the WC happens, so basically no change will happen there.

The only winners of the WC in SA will be the currupt officials that are getting kick backs from the construction projects etc

I am sorry but I have to say that I strongly disagree with you!

Remember that this event is the biggest event that the world
has ever seen and the whole of SA will be winners. Not just aviation
but all industries, small yields or not.

I somehow think that you actually dont understand how
big this is going to be.

Cant wait!!!

Putt for Dough, I'm only refering to aviation not the rest of the economy. The biggest problem SA will have is corruption... Will Dannie "10 per cent" Jordaan get the stadium ready in time or bleed them to death for self gain.

I dont know if I am just a doubter or what......I am sure that there will be extra travel but most of that will be with the international carriersand their partners and javing just gone through Jhb International (OR Tambo Or whatever the heck the call it now) yesterday the line for the security check went halfway down the terminal on both sides......heaven help us if 2010 does happen in RSA. Saw the SA 2010 committe were 90 min late for an international press conference a couple of weeks ago.......never mind the construction that still has to occur........we will probably turn up 9 weeks late for the world cup???

Okay I understand now. You're correct about the corruption. Lets hope
that it won't be too bad.
As one of the main opposition parties say:

Stop corruption,Start Delivery!

Just remember someone still has to pay for the 10 %. so everyone is a looser with corruption. I have a family member who has a bussiness in SA and he tells me about the level of corruption...unbelievable!!!:=

This gain to airlines is assuming of course there'll be ATC's controlling the skies...! The exodus continues

I would seriously recommend that the pilots start working on their situational awareness in control airspace. With the amount of controllers (+/- 8) due to leave in the next 5 months, and even more to follow, I am afraid to say the skies will not be all that safe. Most of the controllers staying behind will have very little experiece and this will just put more pressure on the few experienced controllers that are left. ATNS, more specificly JHB has been short staffed for the last 8+ years. The controllers will all be fatigued! (Some of them already are) There's increased pressure on the instructors to "lower" the standard in order to fill the seats.

So........for your own good LISTEN OUT AND LOOK OUT!!!!
