I saw part of the film 633 Squadron today and have this question for the Mosquito specialists on PPRuNe.
Underneath each engine there is an intake which has a tube-like frame around it, just forward of the intake lip. What is the purpose of this tubular frame? I am assuming that this intake is the carburettor air intake.

No pictures to hand but I think its an intake FOD guard, theres a fine mesh in it to prevent injestion of crud.

I could not see any mesh on the tube but I wasn't paying too much attention . 'er indoors wanted to take my wallet out for an airing :(

Just done a search on GOOGLE and the USAF museum example at Dayton, Ohio has the same tubes supporting a mesh.

The guard has a mesh on it which when in icing conditions will ice up but the carby is still able to draw in air from the gap behind the mesh. Stops the intake itself being choked with ice. Lancaster has the exact same set up. Of course when iced up you lose ram effect. You see the same principle applied on the S-61 helo with the barrier in front of the intakes.
