Zimbabwe state airline to resume London flights after settling debt

'HARARE, Zimbabwe: Zimbabwe's troubled state airline was scheduled to resume its flights to London on Wednesday after paying off a US$2.8 million debt to an international air navigation agency that had threatened to seize its aircraft.

Air Zimbabwe said in a statement the weeklong suspension of flights to Britain ends with the resumption of its London service overnight Wednesday.'

'Last month, the airline raised its fares by up to 500 percent, citing continuing losses and soaring increases in prices of fuel, maintenance and equipment.

Earlier this year, Air Zimbabwe grounded all its services for a day after running out of fuel. Some northbound flights are still being diverted to the capitals of Malawi and neighboring Zambia to load fuel.

Zimbabwe is suffering its worst economic crisis since independence, with inflation of more than 1,000 percent, the highest in the world, and acute shortages of hard currency, gasoline, food and essential imports.'
