Hi all.
Was wondering if many DESO go to the freighter fleet to fast track to a f/o position or desired base port?
Is this a done thing? A good idea?
When are the first 400-ERF a/c arriving?

In order to bid on and receive a DESO position, your pre-joining experience must meet FO requirements (ie. 1000hrs Jet Transport/Corporate Jet Command). If you are awarded the position, you will take a substantial pay cut due to the fact that you will lose all housing assistance and likely put yourself in a higher tax system by taking a base. For these reasons there are not a lot of people making the move at the moment.

I have a friend who is somewhat in this situation. He is was hired and is waiting for an SO class, but would really prefer US Freighter FO out of ANC. He far exceeds FO minimums, so that shouldn't be a problem, its just that an SO class was what he was offered. Does anyone know from experience how long (on average) he would be required to stay as an FO before being allowed the upgrade? Thanks.

If you mean how long as an SO then there is not really a average time because only a handful of SOs have been given freighter FO positions. It could be right away or could never happen. All depends on how the initial course goes and how the line checks etc. The longer you wait as an SO the more chances you will pooch something and then you will not be offered an FO slot. Better off to try and ask before you start your course. A polite phone call to recruitment might steer you friend in the right way.
If you meant FO to Captain well almost the same story !!

sorry but I'd understood that after 3 years as so you would automatically join tha freighter fleet or remain in the pax fleet in hkg but as fo, is this totally uncorrect? so what would be the career path of a so? thanks

DESO : jon HKG pax fleet 3-4 yrs SO then JFO (junior FO) pax fleet Hong Kong (6mos-2years) then FO pax Hong Kong (777, 330)(2-3 years) Then bid for base on 400 or stay in Hong Kong. Elegible for Capt pax after 9-10 years, Possible for Freighter Capt after 6 years depending on prior experience. Also possible for freighter FO (with prior experienc on jets) anytime after one year or so. Latest trick quit CX (when SO) and get re-hired as DEFO pax Amsterdamm or Aus and loose any seniority.
DEFO freighter join USA(400), Europe(400,classic), Austrlia (classic), 3 1/2 years freighter then move to Pax. Elegible for command freighter immediately (assuming prior experience in command heavy jet), command on PAX fleet 9-10 years.
