Indian company signs $70m deal with Qantas

India's software giant Satyam announced it has signed a $70.9 million technology outsourcing contract with Qantas Airways.
Satyam, India's fourth largest software exporter, said under the seven-year pact it would maintain information technology services and develop software for more than 150 applications for Qantas.
"This partnership calls for Satyam to further enhance Qantas operational efficiency," said Virender Aggarwal, senior vice-president of Satyam.
More than 1,000 software professional associates were employed at its unit, Satyam Australia, to supply software development to global companies including nine of the top Fortune 500 firms, he said.
About 100,000 graduates and professionals are employed in the outsourcing and technical support industries in India as global firms take advantage of the country's skilled but relatively cheap English-speaking manpower.
But a shortage of skilled manpower poses an increasing problem and there is concern about mounting wage costs in a fiercely competitive recruiting battle.

And just wait until Qantas want to retender for their IT needs five years into the seven year contract...................Oh of course the managers who made the decision will have collected their bonuses and left by then.

Management is about maximising the long term value of the company.

Air NZ engineers win US$3m contract from UK airline

12:30pm Friday November 10, 2006

Air New Zealand's engineering services division has won a US$3 million ($4.6m) contract for the installation of a new inflight entertainment system and heavy maintenance checks on nine Boeing 767-300 aircraft.

The contract was awarded by British airline Thomsonfly, which has a fleet of 47 aircraft, carrying more than eight million passengers a year.

The work will be carried out at the Air NZ's engineering services division's Auckland facility until May in preparation for Thomsonfly's summer schedule.

The first of the Boeing 767s was to arrive at the Auckland base tomorrow, Air NZ said today.

Heavy maintenance checks will be carried out on seven of the aircraft being sent to Auckland, while the latest Panasonic eFX Audio Visual on Demand inflight entertainment system will be installed on five aircraft.

are they not having trouble finding staff to do this.

Of course not..... it's NZ. They will have no problem finding employees willing to work for peanuts.... undercutting their neighbours.

Pity their neighbours were not enterprising enough to grab the business.

Actually hotdog, us "neighbours" just want fair pay for a fair days work. Why should we sacrafice our standard of living whilst that of our CEO and his evil helpers just keeps getting better and better. We refuse to bend over as our Eastern neighbours have.

If history is anything to go by, I am sure you will have some smart ar$e response as to why we should all take pay cuts and accept worse conditions. .:ugh:

BHM, what makes you so sure that ANZ engineers are working for peanuts? They have retained their jobs and their productivity.

If history is anything to go by, I am sure you will have some smart ar$e response as to why we should all take pay cuts and accept worse conditions.

Take an Alprax and have a lie down. No need to send money, I bulk bill.:ok:

http://www.smh.com.au/news/business/union-turns-air-nz-costcutter/2005/12/06/1133829595538.html

With specific reference to the following:-

ENGINEERING workers will present Air New Zealand's management with a business proposal tomorrow in a last-ditch effort to stop the airline outsourcing most of its heavy maintenance - and hundreds of jobs - to Asia or Europe.

and....

It is understood the proposal will include the scaling back of overtime pay and time off in lieu.

and so us Qantas engineers have to put up with this from our overpaid CEO....

Qantas has already warned it could be forced to follow Air NZ's lead if it could reduce costs across its Australian maintenance operations.

So as CEOs continually increase their obscene renumeration packages year in year out, whilst those that keep the planes flying are expected to accept less and less, do we put up a fight or do we just cop it, as seen in the example above?

How about our executive management lead by example and make their positions more comptetive? (And I mean apples for apples here. If they wish to compare engineering with that of facilities based in 3rd world countries, then so too should the comparison of their positions be made).

Outsource to the cheapest bidder, maximise your renumeration. Dixons rule.

gee BHMvictim , that above quote is true in everyday life not just dixons. it happens everywhere in every business. even you would do it buying everyday products. ( umm which product is cheaper and is the same quality)

so unfortunately you better get use to it becuase this is only the beginning and they call it globalization

also with the Air NZ engineers since they might be losing certian conditions what are they getting in return..let me guess overtime banking , umm doesnt Qantas Brisbane have that implemented?

I don't think quality comes into it these days. If it did, outsourced jobs would still be here in Oz. Ring a support centre in India then one in Australia and tell me which one is "better quality". := :ugh:You couldn't possibly tell me that other countries who can perform maintenance (for example) cheaper than in Oz will match or better the standards of our engineering skills, long considered the world's best?

Globalisation is a load of crap. :yuk: It is a nice catchword for the "take it or leave it" decline in working conditions offered to us "or else we'll shift yer job overseas" in order to boost short-term management bonuses that is affecting not just aviation. If you look ahead into the future (vision seems to be lacking these days, as also noticed by Sunfish) it is not unrealistic to see that your average Aussie will be struggling to pay for the goods and services offered by these companies - the imbalance between rich and poor will be wider than ever with virtually no middle class Australia. This may be worst-case, but it is still possible, even probable.

Getting back to aviation, whatever happened to those posters I used to see on walls, you know the ones:
Safety
Comfort
Schedule
CostOr were they just used to cover the rot which most of us seem to be happy with now? :*

( umm which product is cheaper and is the same quality)

there-in lies the flaw in this argument. Outsourcing is cheaper, however the quality is certainly NOT the same.

Current check in BHM, fairly new, (8yrs old), 767-300. Last heavy maintenance done in Singapore. There are a significant number of defects which are directly related to poor quality of wokmanship performed during the outsourced HM check.

Cheaper, but certainly NOT of equal quality.

BHMvictim, perhaps you should have highlighted the date of the SMH article, which was Dec. 7, 2005.

BHMvictim
12th Nov 2006, 05:25
And your point is what Hotdog?

The article shows that ANZ employees would rather cave in than fight for a fair go. Infact, not only do they cave in, they MADE the proposal to cut pay and conditions, rather than accepting it as a proposal from the company!!

The date is irrelevant.

lowerlobe
12th Nov 2006, 09:14
Hot Dog,

I think the point is that by downgrading their own pay and conditions in NZ they are effectively lowering the conditions for those doing the same job in the near vicinity and that means Australia. The date at which they do this is irrelevant .

BHMvictim
12th Nov 2006, 10:40
:ok: exactly lowerlobe. I really don't see how this point cant be so hard to grasp.

HotDog

The point is , that your news is almost a year old. A lot of water has flown under the bridge since then. The Auckland guys have staved off redundancy without any petulant pathos. So what if they took a pay cut? Air New Zealand is a basket case, sacrifices had to be made. I fail to see why this should bother you, you work in Brisbane for QF.

BHMvictim
13th Nov 2006, 12:10
Because QF is not the same basket case that ANZ is, yet our beloved CEO sees it fit point the finger at ANZ as a warning to us.

It may be old news BUT.... the point is THEY BENT OVER RATHER THAN FIGHT!

End of story.

Hot Dog,
You are talking about a place that maybe another country but is less distance than Sydney to Adelaide.

Because of the close proximity our esteemed leader uses any excuse to argue for pay cuts and an increase in working hours while at the same time increases his pay packet substantailly.

NZ is only across the street so you might think you are isolated but you have only got you head in the sand.I fail to see why you fail to see the impact of what you do on everyone else.

Whether you do something last week or next week the boss at QF will say they can take a pay cut over there so why can't you....You are not in the 1900's any longer we have all moved on.
