The Jean Batten Memorial Award

Established by the Guild in 1992 in memory of the late Liveryman, Miss Jean Batten, to recognise an outstanding individual contribution to New Zealand aviation.

Awarded to: MAXWELL BROOKE STEVENS

Citation:
Maxwell Brooke Stevens joined the New Zealand Air Department as an engineering cadet in 1962. Soon after his graduation as a Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) with Honours in 1965 he was awarded a Cranfield Scholarship for two years post graduate study in aeronautics in the UK and this was followed by another year of practical experience with aeronautical administrations and aircraft manufacturer Britten‑Norman. He returned, married, to New Zealand in December 1969 into the role of assistant aeronautical engineer in the Civil Aviation Division of the Ministry of Transport.

For the last 10 years he has been Deputy Director of the New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority and has exercised a universally valued and sound influence on the culture of civil aviation administration in that country. On the eve of his retirement the Director of Civil Aviation acknowledged his wise counsel and declared him to be 'irreplaceable'. This sentiment would meet with widespread accord in the New Zealand aviation community.

His services to gliding at both club and national association levels over the past 45 years are immense. He has been club captain, secretary and chairman of the New Zealand Gliding Association Technical committee and on the NZGA contest management (sailplane racing) committee. Max has flown over 5,000 hours as a glider pilot, holds a B category instructor rating and is a Gliding New Zealand approved test pilot. He has represented New Zealand at four world championships, holds FAI silver, gold and three diamond badges and has won numerous national titles and awards. He is currently Gliding New Zealand's Chief Executive/Secretary and, as a PPL, is on the glider tow pilot roster at Wellington Gliding Club.

Throughout his 36 year career in aviation, he has made an outstanding contribution to New Zealand aviation through the application of his excellent technical and professional knowledge, his quiet but strong leadership in a broad range of engineering and administrative disciplines including type certifications, airworthiness standards, aerodromes and air navigation standards, safety analysis, research and education as well as his national and international achievements in the field of gliding. Maxwell Brooke Stevens is accordingly awarded the Jean Batten Memorial Trophy.

The Award was presented at a ceremony in London last week, attended by more than 500 pilots from all over the world.
