Antananarivo - Six people died when their light plane crashed shortly after take-off in the southwest of Madagascar, the transport minister said on Wednesday.

Both Madagascan pilots and all four foreign passengers, whose nationalities were not known, died, he said.

"A small plane belonging to a private airline, la SociCtC de Transport ACrien, crashed at about 4:15 am in Toliara ... killing 6 people," Roland Randriamampionona, minister of transport and public works, said on national radio.

Francis Ramanantsoa, director of the regional tourism office who was on the scene after the accident, said the crash happened about 1-kilometre from the runway.

"The plane caught fire and the six bodies were all burnt to ashes," he told Reuters by phone.

(WAPA) - Six people died in an air crash of a small aircraft in South-Western Madagascar. A Cessna 425 by a private airline, Société de transport aérien, crashed soon after the lift-off at 4:15am this morning in Toliara, causing death to two pilots and four foreign passengers on board, among which three Italian employees of a marble production company, according to what the Italian Foreign Ministry communicated. The crash occurred one km from the runway, the aircraft caught fire and the six passengers burnt. Authorities announced an investigation to find out the causes of the accident.
