23/10/2006 14:49 - (SA)

Sao Paulo - A helicopter with three South Africans and two Brazilians on board crashed in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

A source who did not want to be identified told News24 about the incident on Monday.

It appeared as though the helicopter was on its way back from Interlagos where the Brazilian Grand Prix was held at the weekend.

According to Brazilian news website globo.com, the helicopter went down on Sunday at about 17:30 and made a dramatic emergency landing in a built-up area.

According to reports, the helicopter suffered a mechanical failure and struck a building before crashing to earth.

The five occupants, including a child of 13, were not injured.

The pilot could apparently not explain what had caused the accident.

A spokesperson at the SA Embassy in Sao Paulo confirmed that an accident took place but could not release more information about the identity of the passengers or the extent of their injuries.

Three South Africans were among four passengers in a helicopter that crash-landed in a built-up area of São Paulo, Brazil, on Sunday.

"All survived the emergency landing," said Foreign affairs spokesperson Ronnie Mamoepa in Pretoria on Monday.

He said one of the three injured South Africans was in a critical condition in a São Paolo hospital.

"Two South African diplomats have since visited the two lesser injured South Africans and they were in a stable condition," Mamoepa added.

According to the South African consulate in Brazil the three South Africans aboard the helicopter were Richard Henry, Israel Bloomberg and Herman Poilman.

Mamoepa said foreign affairs officials had been in contact with the families of the three injured men in South Africa.

The Brazilian pilot and a child of 13 were not injured according to a Brazilian news report.

The helicopter was apparently returning from the Brazilian Grand Prix at Interlagos when the aircraft suffered malfunction, hitting a building before crashing.
