A few ATC guys post regularly on pprune. Those of you that do, please check the members only forum on the Civilair website. Mods, this is not an add for another forum, just a heads up for people to be careful what they say with regards to protecting their anonymity.:ok:

Not to my knowledge. That is not what this post was intended to highlight, but those who work for AsA should not underestimate what they can do. One employee posted a .wmv file from his home account, which AsA decided was not appropriate for public viewing and the Canberra corporate security guys showed up in Melbourne with a "please explain". Nearly cost him his job.

The point of the original post is that the more we as ATC post here, the more we eventually give clues as to who we are and where we work. I know it certainly wouldn't be hard to work out from my posts where I work.

Most network servers record the web sites visited by each terminal. Government usually have additional software to serve their own tracking needs. I'm not technical enough to know whether a network server's records could trace back to an individual post on a bulletin board.

Most ISP's also record sites visited by each of their subscribers.

Web sites record the IP address of each visitor and in the case of bulletin boards (Civilair Forum, PPRuNe Forum etc), attach the user's IP address to the post.

Nothing new - that has always been the case.

In Australia, stories that cannot be proved true are vulnerable to defamation suits, unless they relate to politics and were produced in a reasonable way.... public interest (safety etc) plays a part also!!

What if ....

A poster, who goes by his real name, says that another poster,who uses an alias, is a danger to air safety or a dick head or something similarly defammatory?

I guess he can't be charged ... as no real person was defammed.

It therefore follows that the only real protection against someone telling porkies about you, or belittling you is to go by your real name.


It further follows that there's probably only one or two people on this forum who have protection against defamation, and they can say what they like about the rest of us.

OR, we could all go by our real names ... and sit politely at the computer desk, too scared to say anything.

Peuce. Primary legal responsibility for posts published on this bulletin board rests with the publisher, PPRuNe. However, in any legal action the Court may direct discovery from the parties, which may include a user’s posts, profile, IP addresses and any other information PPRuNe may hold on the user.

The name(s) used are totally irrelevant – I could register a particular person’s name as a user name and appear to be that individual, however that identity must still be proven in a Court of Law.

PPRuNe vigorously protects user’s identities and personal information, but is unable to refuse to disclose information if directed by a Court. The same applies to all internet bulletin boards – not just PPRuNe.

Post responsibly. If you would not post something in your own name, don’t post it in your PPRuNe user name. One day you may be required to justify your post!

If you adhere to the facts and follow ****su's advice you - and PPRuNe - should have nothing to worry about.

If the organisations concerned were half smart, they would encourage participation on prune, etc. They would watch, listen and learn. Too many organisations have a military style one way communication system.

That would assume adgenda free, transparent, open and honest management and Govt...when have you ever seen that?
