Interesting article on TNN this morning, anyone have more to add?
LONRHO Africa has just acquired 49% of the newly established Kenyan low-cost airline, Five Forty Aviation (Fly540), for R11,6m in cash.
Nairobi-based Fly540, which also provides freight services was created to meet growing demand for alternative domestic and regional air travel within Africa and Lonrho says Kenya is an ideal base for the new airline as it is a popular tourist destination with a thriving domestic air travel market.
The carrier plans to commence operations in Kenya within two months, the
inaugural route being the busy Nairobi-Mombasa connection and this will be followed by regular services to Malindi and Kisumu.
But in 2007, Fly540 intends to launch its first international services into the East African region with at least four new destinations and four more in 2008.
The airline will initially deploy a fleet of two modern turboprop aircraft and in 2007, Fly540 plans to add two additional similar aircraft.
Fly540 says it already has offices and check-in facilities at Nairobi domestic and international terminals and Mombasa Airport, he said.
