We fly this route five or six times a year, and nearly always the flightdeck tells passengers when starting the descent into Luton, that the arrival time depends on whether ATC allows the "short cut" or not. What is the short cut in relation to the standard procedure?:8

The standard arrival into Luton and Stansted from the south is called the Lorel2C. The full routing of this arrival takes you over the top of Heathrow and then Luton will be on your left and Stansted will be on your right hand side. Once essex radar get a hold of us its anyones guess where we will end up - usually over Duxford somewhere  .They then vector you around for a bit at about 6000ft and then hand you over to Luton Approach. This basically boils down to the congested airspace around the London area. You will also end up on the Lorel2C arrival (which falls to the East of Luton) whether your landing on the Easterly or Westerly facing runway.
If you get the shortcut however, and I think this depends on traffic in the hold, departing and arriving into Heathrow it tends to be a dirty dive just beyond Heathrow in order to loose the height to maintain a constant descent. The shortcut will bring you straight onto a base join - this can save 10 - 15mins, a lot of track miles, and a lot of fuel and if any controllers are out there it is GREATLY APPRECIATED - thank you in advance :ok: .
Hope this answers your question.
Happy flying,
BP
