Can somebody with the know please help me out with the Aussie Regs here.
Does base training, touch and go's, performed in the left hand seat after a command FAR121/JAR type rating (> 40tons aircraft) get logged as PICUS or dual?

Thanks
Kanger

Dunno about FAR121/JAR or why they would affect what can be logged under
Australian Regs, but here are the most relevant sections of the CARs

In summary, must be CPL or ATPL, fully qualified to fly as Pilot in Command
for the flight, assigned as Co-pilot for the flight, authorised by the
operator to fly as ICUS, and perform all the duties and functions of PIC while
being supervised by the actual PIC on the flight in question.

Hope you can map that onto your situation ...
Regards

CAR 5.01
(3) For the purposes of this Part, a person flies an aircraft as pilot acting in
command under supervision if, during flight time in the aircraft, the
person performs the duties and functions of the pilot in command
while under the supervision of the pilot in command approved for the
purpose by the operator of the aircraft.

CAR 5.40 Pilot acting in command under supervision

(1) A person may fly an aircraft as pilot acting in command under
supervision only if:
(a) the person holds:
(i) a commercial pilot licence or an air transport pilot licence; or
(ii) a certificate of validation that has effect as if it were a
commercial pilot licence or an air transport pilot licence; and
(b) the person holds an aircraft endorsement that authorises him or
her to fly the aircraft as pilot in command; and
(c) if the person proposes to carry out an activity for which a flight
crew rating is required—the person holds a flight crew rating, or
grade of flight crew rating, that permits him or her to carry out
that activity as pilot in command of the aircraft concerned; and
(d) the person is the co-pilot of the aircraft; and
(e) the operator of the aircraft permits the person to fly the aircraft as
pilot acting in command under supervision; and
(f) the pilot in command of the aircraft is appointed for the purpose
by the operator of the aircraft.

G'day Unhinged,
Thanks for the info. In that case, I suppose that means 'dual'....

Another question comes to mind. Can somebody sitting in the left seat be assigned the position of copi or is pic/copilot irrelevant of seat position?

I wonder if any of the long range 3 or more crew guys can help us out with what the situation is with 2 pics and a copi. Is there a pic for the whole flight regardless of whether he is in the bunk or is the guy in the left seat the pic for that phase of the flight?

cheers
Kanger

2 Capts+1SFO/FO = 1 designated aircraft commander (whether asleep or awake) 1 relief Capt/PIC and 1 copilot. Only the aircraft commander can log the entirety of the flight...everyone else logs time in the seat.

Thanks Woomera for your info.
Have I understood correctly that when the relief capt. is in the left seat he is logging PIC and only then...
The rest of it about the designated commander logging pic the whole time is clear.

By the way, when such commanders do circuits after their sim training and sim checkout, is the time in the left seat while doing touch & go's logged as 'dual' as well?

Thanks
