BBC Radio 5 just had this. Quoted a source as saying "diverted due to an abundance of caution"

Hopefully just another clostrophobic pax, with a dodgy blue rinse.

Flight From Atlanta Diverted

POSTED: 9:45 am EDT September 11, 2006
UPDATED: 10:46 am EDT September 11, 2006

ATLANTA -- A United Airlines flight from Atlanta to San Francisco has been diverted to Dallas, Texas because of security concerns.

CNN reports that a backpack was removed from the plane's cargo hold before the flight left Atlanta.

Airline officials could not link the backpack to any passenger on the flight so it was taken off the plane, according to CNN.

After the plane took off from Atlanta a flight attendant found a Blackberry device on the plane. No one on the plane claimed the device.

At that point United Airlines officials ordered the plane, flight 351, to land in Dallas.

"The aircraft is secure," said Transportation Security Administration spokeswoman Yolanda Clark. She said there was no indication that the hand-held computer was being used as an explosive device or trigger.

The flight was diverted on the fifth anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks. Authorities decided not to send military fighter aircraft to escort the jet, as is routine during an emergency, said Lt. Col. John Cornelio, a spokesman for U.S. Northern Command.

All the passengers and cargo will be rescreened at that point.

SAN FRANCISCO -- A United Airlines flight has been cleared to resume its flight to San Francisco after after finding an unclaimed BlackBerry on board. The plane was initially diverted to Dallas.

The plane is scheduled to land at SFO at 11:38 a.m., according to the United Web site.

A spokesperson for the Transportation Security Administration said it was both an unclaimed backpack and a BlackBerry handheld device that prompted them to divert United flight 351.

A spokesperson for the Transportation Security Administration said the backpack was removed from the plane before it departed from Atlanta, but during the flight the unclaimed electronic device was discovered.

Transportation Security Administration spokeswoman Yolanda Clark said the jet was secure. It was diverted to Dallas "out of an abundance of caution," Clark said.

"The aircraft is secure," Clark said. She said there was no indication that the hand-held computer was being used as an explosive device or trigger.

After the plane landed at Dallas, dogs were used to check the plane and all 43 passengers had to go through security again.

Authorities decided not to send military fighter aircraft to escort the jet, as is routine during an emergency, said Lt. Col. John Cornelio, a spokesman for U.S. Northern Command.

United spokeswoman Robin Urbanski said 50 people were aboard the Airbus 319. The passengers were rescreened after getting off the plane in Dallas.

The backpack belonged to a woman who had been a passenger on an earlier flight on the same jet, Urbanski said.

For a moment there I had visions of a mysterious passenger disappearing in mid air leaving a Blackberry on his seat and a backpack in the hold. <insert theme music from the X-files>
