View Full Version : Cathay hour requirements (realistic)

Hi everyone,

I've done a search on this and came up with nothing (has this question really never been asked?), but ....

How many hours do most people that are getting a call for their first interview have? I know there website requires 1000h TT as a minimum, but realistically, how many hours would one have (and what type of flying background) before getting "the call".

Just trying to sum up my chances (many very friendly/helpful people immediately responded to pms). How would one fair with just under 2000h tt with all glass cockpit regional jet experience, aged under 30? Anyone ever get the call with under 2000h TT?

Thanks very much for shedding some light on this subject. All the best!

Got the call with 1200 hrs total time, most of it (heavy) jet. Required expercience seems to be going down. Good luck with your application.

I've been told (by Cathay recruitment) that they like 3000 total, but will look at 2500 with good turbine experience.

There are the occasional few that get interviews with much less total time, or even no turbine time.

I think it also depends on where you're flying, and for what company.

I got the call for DEFO with 4100 TT and about 1200 PIC turbine (ERJ).

British guy that joined after me had something like 700hrs and no multi at all when he did his 2nd interview.
He also had a few thousand hours in choppers.

Even though he passed the tests, interviews and the 747 sim, he had to wait to get 1000hrs before he could join. (About 5 years ago though before 9/11 etc)

There are so many people now, Cathay can set the bar higher in quailty and quantity of hours.
Market forces that all.

Citation 10, I'll let you know! Sounds like we are in pretty similar positions; age hours etc.

I'm under 30, & have just sent in my application with 2200 TT, of which 1950 is widebody jet, and about 300 widebody command. Slightly on the low side but hoping the "experience commmensurate with age" kicks in.

Only time will tell....

You got a widebody command with 1900 hrs? Or is that some type of "PIC under supervision" exclusion?

I think you will find some of these guys are military where it isn't uncommon for someone to have this type of experience.:ok:

Received the call for SO with just over 1600 TT. Age 26. Passed the second interview and am currently waiting for a start date (it seems as though this process can take a while nowadays). Most guys at the interview were aged 30 - 35 with experience between 2500 - 6000 TT on turbo props. ALL THE BEST OF LUCK!! :ok:

If you don't mind me asking, how do already have nearly 4000TT at age 25? when and where did you land your first job? military or civilian?
Thanks

A friend of mine got hired in 1996 with 1200 hours total time, mostly Cessna 172 that he was instructing on. He's a 777 Captain now.

Me on the other hand, I've been invited for a 2nd interview for a S/O posistion....:)

6000+ total
1000+ high-performance turbine PIC
1000+ over 20,000kg turbine
4000+ multi-PIC
29 years old
10 years commercial flying experience

Hey Cedar,
Just Curious but your time over 20000Kg is it PIC or FO.
Does anyone know the realistic requirements for DEFO, will they actually look at a guy with 1000 hrs PIC Heavy Turbo Prop.
Thanks
DW

Hi DW,

None of my PIC is over 20,000kg, I only have 12,500lb+ PIC. I'm curious how many pilots have interviewed for DESO and were offered DEFO?

hi, whats the actual basing policy?
either for f/o and s/o?
thanks

mgTF

As far as basing goes, all DESO's start on long haul PAX fleet flights and are based in HK until they upgrade to JFO, which at this point bidding for a different base is an option (upgrade is usually around 4 years). ALL DEFO's start off on the freighter fleet and there are a few basing options , if you don't want to live in HK, they can then bid for the PAX fleet after 2-3 years i believe (correct me if i'm wrong on this one).

hope this helps.

thanks,
is legend that they pay a ticket for you to fly from your hometown to your base and viceversa at the end of duty? or is true?
once you are hired is possible to change your base also in other countries and continent so as to travel a bit? do they promote any visas in that case?

No A1R_RESQ. It is possible to have that experience on wide-body without a military background.
I speak for my self, i´ve around 1500 TT with over 1100 Heavy-Jet (L1011-500)
That hour vs experience scenario sometimes it´s not quite a direct relatioship as people tend to think or believe.
Anyway i´ve applied for CX and nothing still, but i wont give up.
