Not being a spotter I only have a vague idea that this is a 1930's Lockheed:

Am I right or did the artist have an imaginative day?

Remember Mike Oldfield being interviewed on 'Pebble Mill' concerning the event that inspired the song. Somewhat dates me I suspect.

It's a Lockheed 10 Electra Junior I think... Dates me about the same time, I remember buying the album when it first came out, but have never replaced it with a CD... Mike Oldfield was quite into aircraft I think, didn't another of his album cover have r/c gliders on it?

The three cabin windows, irregularly spaced, say Lockheed Electra Junior 12-A. A classic of classics! :)

If my memory serves me, Hergest Ridge by MO had gliders on the cover

There was a 1976 made-for-TV movie "Amelia Earhart" in which a Lockheed 12-A was substituted for AE's 10-E. I recall much outstanding air-to-air photography in the film, and if I'm not mistaken this album cover borrows heavily from that imagery. :ooh:

Just to confuse the issue, the Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Five_Miles_Out) entry suggests it is a Beechcraft 18 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beechcraft_18). Now I am confused.

I remember buying the album when it first came out, but have never replaced it with a CD...

Likewise, right down to the Preedy's £5.49 price label!

Don't be confused. The "bat wings" of the horizontal tail extending outboard of the fins tell you this is NOT a Beech 18.

The Beech belly is flat (square corners with the fuselage sides) too. :8
