Heard a brief news item about this a couple of weeks back.
Search on PPrune did not turn up anything.
Anyone know the details? Something about Mercury leakage at BN?
Pax smuggled a coke bottle of mercury past security on a PNG domestic flight sometime last year. During the flight the mercury leaked out of the bottle in the forward cargo bay. Aircraft structure/skin was xrayed and best efforts made to remove the mercury in Brisbane. Follow up xrays weeks/months later showed more traces of mercury under the cargo bay floor.
Stork Fokker couldn't come up with a repair scheme that they would guarantee 100% effective, which the insurance company wanted. So, cheaper to write it off. Anyway, its airworthy extension ran out at the start of August so it was ferried to Brisbane for storage while Alliance and PX nutted things out with the insurers.
This is just what I've been told, so given the usual chinese whispers expect some of these details to be a bit off. Thats the basics of the situation though.

Correct with the gold extraction. Believed to BORROWED from the POM hospital.
Detected by security, but a few Kina behind the scanner and allowed to travel.

Is that the P2 one parked outside Boeing at BN?
Looks good on the outside.
