View Full Version : Toronto Island Airport (YTZ)

I'm planning on travelling from Toronto to Ottawa (YOW) in mid-September. I was hoping to fly out of YTZ (Toronto Island airport that shut down back in February) but is 'supposed' to be re-opening for flights on Air Canada Jazz on the 28th August. (It's currently bookable on AC's website). However, there appears to be a lot of legal wrangling going on with the government-run agency in charge of the airport saying that AC will NOT be able to use the aiport. Does anyone know for certain what is happening? TIA.

Try the "Canada" forum. There's been some discussion about this issue there.

O.K. That would seem to have some relevance to the questions raised by Robertkc. I initially read his post as 'the airport was closed' but I assume it is closed to airline traffic only until some dispute is sorted? Still not too clear on the issues involved here!

Bottom-line: AC claim the right to operate, airport says they don't. Airport says they need new operating agreement (probably looking for more money?) AC says they're just trying to screw them and give an advantage to Porter Airlines who won't be ready to go by the 28th.

It's going to be pretty embarrassing for AC and YTZ if people show up on the 28th especially since they are probably going to be business types.

Update: YTZ has refused to approve a sublease of Stolport facilities to AC (http://www.canada.com/vancouversun/news/travel/story.html?id=7550fa94-60cf-4f5f-a7e3-db480ece8cb2&k=67072) so reinstatement has been delayed. Here's the ACJ release (http://www.newswire.ca/en/releases/archive/August2006/08/c4240.html).

On a personal opinion I think it was profoundly stupid of ACJ to load the schedules and rely on TPA to back down and now have to refund pax. Sure TPA are acting like idiots but ACJ also have acted in an anticompetitive way in the past.

Update2:TPA are introducing an "Airport improvement fee" (http://www.torontoport.com/PortAuthority/media_content.asp?id=275) charge of $15 from 15-Sep. Is this when Deluce thinks Porter will be ready I wonder?
