Zoom Airlines plans overseas expansion
SCOTT DEVEAU
Zoom Airlines Inc., which operates low-cost flights between Canada and Britain, announced yesterday it plans to expand its operations to other worldwide destinations. The carrier, owned by entrepreneur Hugh Boyle, made the announcement yesterday after the Bank of Scotland Growth Equity acquired a minority stake in the airline as part of a $12-million investment package. The bank's investment will provide additional funds to launch a British-based airline for the carrier[/B], as well as assisting with a rolling fuel hedging package. Mr. Boyle said the new flights will not be operational until next year, but he is currently looking at flying to other locations in Europe, Africa, India, and the U.S..

Zoom Airlines may offer NYC-London route
Zoom Airlines, a closely held Canadian carrier controlled by Scottish entrepreneur Hugh Boyle, may start low-fare flights between New York and London next year to tap strong demand for transatlantic travel. Zoom is creating a British subsidiary funded in part by selling a 7.5-per-cent stake to Bank of Scotland for £5.7-million ($12.15-million). The Ottawa-based airline already offers low-fare flights between Canada and Britain. "There is a lot of demand on north Atlantic flights. London to New York is one that we are considering," Mr. Boyle said yesterday. Zoom would be joining startups such as Maxjet Airways, Eos and Silverjet PLC in challenging established transatlantic carriers, including British Airways PLC and Virgin Atlantic Airways, on high-yield routes between London and New York.
