What helicopter do you hope to fly some day?

I:
Aircrane

As a student pilot I'd have to say for the moment I'd love to get a go of a Huey. I know, I'm an ass. But someday it'd have to be an S-61. Someday.

I'd love to have a go flying a Chinook - it's such a big, noisy, lumbering beastie and I love 'em. So, if there's anyone out there who could help me out with that, you'd earn my undying gratitude (and maybe a few pints!)

I'd love to fly a Rotorway, especially if they ever make a turbine. Would be cool to own one and take a girl on a date in it.

Whirls,

Once again you prove to all and sundry what "good taste" is all about. Never mind the slingloads....go for "the" real helicopter.

Surely someone at Odi can make that happen....so long as you leave the Banjo and Go-Go boots at home.

Where I used to live, next to the Kennet & Avon canal just out Thatcham, I could sit in my garden and watch the Chinooks flying overhead.

Nearby was a large expanse of wasteland over which much of the training took place I'm sure. I have sat there and waved up at them and, a couple of times, I've had a landing flashed back at me!

So if there's any of you guys out there who can remember a a demented woman waving at you on the banks of the canal, it were I!

Cheers

The Sikorsky Super Stallion It flies just like one would expect a 13,000 hp. helicopter to fly. It is surprisingly agile for a big old girl and really fast. :ok:

Crikey - a pervert! Flown 'em for nearly ten years and the rotors STILL go round the wrong way.

Now, give me back my all-time favourite, the S-70 Blackhawk with the 701-C engines; nearly 1900 SHP each - now we are talking proper helicopters.

I learned to fly in an enstrom. After getting my rating, I managed to get about 4 hours of time in a couple of S76's. First couple in an A model, the second couple in a B. To a junior birdman like me, it was awesome. Fast, powerful. I got to rack it over in 60 degree bank turns. I got to do wingovers (rotor-overs?). I got to shoot power recovery autos. I got to fly with SAS off, which was pretty challenging at full gallop. With SAS on, it was a dream to fly. And, since I had a grownup along every time, I didn't have to be smart about the systems. It's a great machine.

Yes, a well equipped S-76 is probably still the best IFR to VFR machine on the market today, which is extremely good considering how long in the tooth they now are.

We do a lot with ours that other operators can't.

...as in teen-dream? Well, I'm flying one of them - the EC120 - sleek and sexy, even all these years later. The other is the MD530F or 500E, either one is still the 427 Camaro of the helicopter world. In third is the RAH-66 Comanche, with the AH-1 Cobra right on its heels. Finally, for sheer lumbering force combined with a strange beauty, it's the Ericson Aircrane (not to mention now I can bring all my toys with me).

Now all I need is a big hangar and a lifetime supply of Jet-A.

SAS is Stability Augmentation System. It's rate feedback for stability. I didn't fly with any of the autopilot functions like attitude hold. I turned trim off and pretty much just flew it. No way was I going to let the autopilot have any of the fun on my 4 hours.

Wow, what a question. What I would most like to fly (that I haven't already)?
In the following order.....

My own machine!
then (with appropriate ordnance included of course....:8 ):
Rooivalk the ultimate gunship
AH-1Z Cobra the latest cockpit systems and I've always wanted to fly a Cobra. The AH-1J or T if the Z is not available!
A129 Mongoose agile and sexy are it's middle names
Bell 214 ST they just dont make them like this anymore
Bell 230 they just dont make them anymore and they look great
MD 902 Unique. and they may not make them much longer
KA-50 Russian attack power: love to sample it
S 92 A Black Hawk that you can walk around the back in, fantastic!
the A-10! I know its not a helicopter - but it's so good it could be squeezed into anyone's wish list!

....but really I'll fly anything that is free and looks safe!!

(the one on top ;))

That said, I'd love to fly a BO105 (or anything else that can do backflips or fly upside down).

In the real world, at this point in my flying career, I'd be pretty thrilled to be let out in a jetranger (ie. anything bigger than a robbo)...

MD500.

For looks. Its the Lamborghini Countach Poster-boy of Helicopters - it's just not possible to find a sleeker machine. An aesthetically perfect tear-drop shape. Like the Jetranger, its become ubiquitous - and as a 'classic' everything is measured against it. Sure, some EC's are great looking machines, but in my eyes just don't quite compare. Kind of like Japanese sports cars - no matter how good they look, they're still not a Ferrari.

Of course the BO105 doesnt quite have the looks but sure does have the performance.
I'd like to fly the Lynx just because its the fastest - and an empty Chinook or Aircrane because of the size and power.

Thier are a number of helicopters out their that would be in this category but it would have to be in order -: BV234 Chinook
AS332 Super Puma
EC155
EH101
S76
S61
The S-92 I,m affraid is too ugly it look's like a flying box it is as though no thought went in to the design of this helicopter, it will never be a classic like the Chinook or Puma.

Sikorsky try again!!!!!

may be you will succeed next time!!!!!

I'm sure their will be someone out their that will disagree with this but tell some who cares.

Whirls, a lady of exceptional taste. The mighty wokka may be big and noisy but there is nothing lumbering about it. With 8000shp in your left hand an empty cab performs very nicely - just try a bit of low level fighter affil. Combine that with a three-gun fit, a robust, reliable, proven design, a pretty comprehensive self defence suite, a great bunch of colleagues and you've got an all round good deal. So you want to have a ride in one, Whirls? If you're hot enough, I'm sure we could work something out.;)

Pandalet, the Halo certainly is an impressive beast - the size of an airliner but it can hover! Just to 'invert' that pic of yours, when I was operating Chinnies in Iraq, close to Shaibah, there was a Halo abandoned in the desert having been damaged (possibly LGBed) previously. When I returned 6 months later, the aircraft had been stripped to virtually nothing by local looters and scrappies. Unfortunately, I don't have any pics of that but it can still be seen on Google Earth - just.

Max,
Impeccable taste and succinctly put, I'm firmly in your camp! Parked a Chinny next to a Halo a few years ago. I walked about two hundred yards away and turned round. Never, ever, seen a Chinook look so small! The Hokum is a true beast, designed with Heli v Heli in mind, so where does it fit in my list?
1. Chinook - all the cab you'll ever need!
2. Hokum - all the cab you'll ever want!
3. UH1 - Every helo pilot should fly one...
4. Gazelle - So simple, so fast, so fun.....
5. YAH-56 Cheyenne - What a concept!
Oh, and yes, I'd love to fly the Warthog too!!!

Anyone who says the S76 has no power hasn't flown the newer models. The A++ has plenty of power, and the first limit at altitude is usually Vne. The C++ has lots of power and all the bells and whistles, but I'm still waiting for the S76D. Might be a long wait, because AFAIK the engines haven't even been built yet. If they perform as advertised, though, it should be a very nice machine.

Gomer Pylot
29th Jul 2006, 20:54
The AW139 doesn't seem to be making the grade in the GOM. It just doesn't live up to the claims the manufacturer makes. The S76D will be well beyond what the 139 can offer, if it even comes close to the promises, because the C++ does a better job than the 139.

Canadian Rotorhead
29th Jul 2006, 20:58
