View Full Version : Where is Airship gone........?

I appreciated so much his brilliant rethoric and vast culture which made this site so interesting, while his style of controversy was allways full of respect for antagonists.

Was he banned for obscure nationalist reasons I have no mean to evaluate?

Did he leave PPRune being bored by censored onesided bellicist posts?

I hope he is well with enough drinkable resources to face these 38°C heat waves, and is afforded the right to enlighten us with his prose!

But where has everyone gone? And more to the point, why have they gone? They can't all be on vacation, surely?! :}

OK, after 3 years of regularly posting here in JB, I realise that it does get quiet around here at this time of the year. But the present situation borders on the ridiculous. Daily, we experience the extremes of zero moderation to threads being deleted at a whim without explanation.

Danny, if JetBlast really is a waste of bandwidth and other PPRuNe resources, then please consider the idea of off-loading it before the baby withers away completely. Cash either way, ideally, even some form of continued PPRuNe participation in a new entity? Think about it. I'd even go so far as to say that you owe that consideration to all the regulars here as well as those aviation pros who merely like to pop in for some amusement now and then. JetBlast may well be your pet-hate or source of amusement depending on your humour at the time. But I assure you that we are not your toys!

So be it...! :ok:

If you want a return to the bad old days of jetblast, you could always go over to Jetblasters. Some of the classics from the olden days hang out there. Haven't been there much lately, but you will see the effect of less moderation. (generally not so beneficial. lots of cliques and piling on...)

On the other hand, the hotel lobby rules aren't in effect either so of course there is porn, which forgives all sins in my book :E

The problem with Jetblast is that it has a tendancy to become the tail wagging the dog. But without it there is not enough of a repository for non aviation stuff, and face it, all pilots like to talk about other things while hanging around aircraft... So the thread drift would be interminable without the jetblast dumping grounds...

While frustrating at times, the balance is pretty good.

While frustrating at times, the balance is pretty good. I assume that you're merely referring to the political threads here then... :} I was thinking more globally! :(

Grandpa
27th Jul 2006, 05:39
No!

You can't call it "moderation" when periodicall Dany's anger shuts threads, as if it could change facts and ideas exchanged on them.

Censorship is the word, same as in many parts of the world where many wouldn't dare to live in, - Would you Danny? -.

Danny's nationalist and militarist approach is ruining PPRune's shining lights, and I will regret in the future the opportunity we had to talk freely about important topics.

Controversy is life: without it PPRune is dead!

Grandpa

There is an old saying which roughly put is...

He who pays the piper calls the tune!

Danny is currently paying the piper and that is that.

On a more controversial note are the users now paying the piper being asked to get hand in pocket for personal titles?

No matter what your opinion, this is his toy to play with (unless he gets sick of it and sells it) and we are just the disposeable assetts.

Hamsterwheel is Hardly PPRUNE's greatest shining light. The fact that you think so is part of the problem. Are you even aware of what PPRUNE stands for?

This is the PROFFESSIONAL PILOTS RUMOUR (NOTE I SPELLED IT BRITISH:cool: ) NETWORK. While it has expanded to a certain amount of spotter clientelle, spotters are atleast amusing to pilots. Furthermore, most proffesionaly pilots who truly enjoy their career instead of simply viewing it as a paycheck started off as spotters in one form or another, and early in the career were virtually indistinguishable from less extreme forms of the spotter animal.

This is not a political board to debate policy and politics. There are THOUSANDS of them out there. I suggest you try a few. IF you can't knock America or any of your other favourite targets in here, my heart bleeds for you, but there are plenty of websites where you can untill you fingers fall off.

All the HamsterWheel seams to do is pull in other lunatics who also have no interest in aviation and just want to argue politics. Don't believe me? I have one word that utterly proves it... BUBETTE!

And most telling of all, what have you DONE to support prrune/Jetblast/hamsterwheel? You certainly have tied up a lot of bandwith with your posts, yet you haven't purchased a handle to help defray some of the costs. I never saw you at any of the bashes I went to. Have you atleast donated to the scholership fund?

Ahem! AFAIK, we here in the UK, spell PROFESSIONAL with only ONE 'F'.
In other words, there's only one 'F' in Professional.

...............so let me take them one by one (and sometimes alltogether because they are connected).

Hamsterwheel seems to be interesting for a lot of viewers if not posters: you only have to count affluence when it's on the air and when it isn't.

I'm glad you don't rank me in the lunatics, I'm a retired airline pilot, and why shouldn't they take part in political discussions?

"and most telling of all" as you say, I think I have done a lot for PPRune expressing my opinion on this forum................in posts which are not so lenghty that bandwith could suffer from it in any way.

Should I have gone to bashes?
Forum are a tool for communication.
That people may gather and meet with new faces while enjoying drinks it's up to them..............but my way of life - at the moment - doesn't leave me with enough time and strength to travel.
Sorry Wino you won't see me in any bashes.

I'm glad to know you donated to scholarship fund, please don't believe this entitles you to lead anybody to express their compassion the way you have chosen to express yours.

I wonder how naive people may be: how can you fancy Danny could be influenced in his censqorship decision by the amount of money any single PPRuner would have donated?
Seems to me you have a poor idea of him!
Even if I disagree with Danny most of the time, I think he is flying high above this a(l)titude!

Grandpa, I agree with you. The forum is different things to different people.

I thought it was interesting that Pprune Towers, by his own admission, reigned Danny in (on a thread that saw only brief light of day) for his own protection. From his post flashed a fleeting image of Howard Hughes, his genius and sanity wrested from him by his handlers.

I thought it was interesting that Pprune Towers, by his own admission, reigned Danny in... Very smart of (Rob?) IMHO. You can't have someone like Danny, owner of a prestigious website of worldwide acclaim such as PPRuNe, wandering about in some threads literally foaming at the mouth...?! :ok:

So maybe it's Rob I should have addressed in a PM on the subject?! ...if JetBlast really is a waste of bandwidth and other PPRuNe resources, then please consider the idea of off-loading it before the baby withers away completely. Cash either way, ideally, even some form of continued PPRuNe participation in a new entity? Think about it. Hint: If someone was to hit the "report this post to a mod" button, it might even end up on Rob's desktop for serious consideration...?! :ok:

Bandwith thing here, and I see the problem.

Generating more traffic for the site is not necesarily a benefit. If Danny wanted to pump up traffic on the site he can do it in a second. Only two words required.... FREE PORN.

In many ways the increasing traffic on pprune has been a problem and a hardship for Danny...I haven't talked to him about it lately, but he was having to buy a new server every 9 months or so to handle the ever increasing volume... Then he reached the limits of the software and had change software vendors... (anyone remember LISTSERV then UBB and all the other incarnations of pprune?) Then he had to get bigger backbones to the server. I think at one point he was using more bandwith than the BBC. All of that costs money. While he brings in money from the Adverts, that model by itself isn;t enough.

Then once you have the structure to handle the traffic you still have to sort through it to find what you want...

To bring this to a more aviation like comparison, its like the PanAm Shuttle(copying the wildly successfull Eastern Shuttle). When they set up the shuttle between washington newyork and Boston they set up a mildly profitable operation. Though it was mildly profitable in its own right it actually harmed the parent company because as a Halo operation it surrounded the mainling flying, but contributed nothing and pulled away resources that could have been better used elsewhere...

So the trick becomes increasing the traffic to the site that increases its core aviation traffic.... Not just increases traffic for the sake of traffic...

Cheers

Perhaps if the 'experts' (and by here I mean those with high hours) weren't so scathing and aggressive (often to each other) more of us would contribute to the 'serious' forums and not feel they were damned and consigned to the 'fun' forums. Or would that upset the old-school members?

Wino, excuse me if I appear to be somewhat incredulous (it's well after my usual bedtime - call me G-CPTN 2IC?)... Hamsterwheel is Hardly PPRUNE's greatest shining light. Grandpa never said that. However, controversy and the ability of members to express themselves at least in the aviation forums is one of PPRuNe's raison d'ętre, in case you'd forgotten... :}

And if PPRuNe ever became associated with FREE PORN, that would very likely drastically reduce the number of avaition-related users with corporate internet connections. Any other bright ideas?!

PS. You might also want to reconsider this statement I think at one point he was using more bandwith than the BBC. :p

Nope, remember that statement clear as day during the 04 Gat Bash, having breakfast with Danny and Blue and the computer guy... (sorry, dude, your name got away from me at the moment....)

Grandpa, I am sure that on this fine sunny morning, you will be biting your lip deeply, as I am.

Do not bite too deeply though.

Save some biting for whatever lies ahead in this bitter, twisted conflict.

......I realize more and more how we can be blind, or one eyed.

People are suffering in Israel same as Lebenon (many more) and some people close their eye to one side while the other one is crying for selected people supposed to be "more human" than the others I think.
