Medals including the Victoria Cross sold by his family (24/07/06) at auction for $AU 1.2million. Captain Alfred Shout, 1st Battalion, 1st Infantry Brigade, 1st Division, AIF.
(9th August 1915, at Lone Pine Trenches, Gallipoli Peninsula (Posthumous Award).

"CITATION: For most conspicuous bravery at Lone Pine Trenches, in the Gallipoli Peninsula. On the morning of 9th August, 1915, with a small party, Captain Shout charged down trenches strongly occupied by the enemy and personally threw four bombs among them, killing eight and routing the remainder. In the afternoon of the same day, from the position gained in the morning, he captured a further length of trench under similar conditions and continued personally to bomb the enemy at close range, under very heavy fire, until he was severely wounded, losing his right hand and left eye.

This most gallant officer has since succumbed to his injuries".

Rumour has it that the unnamed private buyer is Kerry Stokes (owner of the Channel 7 TV network) and that he was personally prevailed on to do so by the Prime Minister, John Howard. Apparently the PM has stitched up a deal whereby the VC (and indeed all Captain Shout's medals) will now be donated to the Australian War Memorial - meaning that all the ANZAC Gallipoli VC's will now be on display there.

Allegedly the second highest bidder was a British aristo of some description who wanted to buy it as an investment. One can only imagine the reaction of the winner of the medal if that had occurred - the phrase "turning in his grave" comes to mind!

Nice work to all concerned who have ensured that this piece of history will now stay on display to the Australian public for ever.

And turns out he was a bluddy Kiwi anyway! Hopefully this fact will be also be acknowledged appropriately at the memorial.

Lest we forget.......

The whole lot were sold today for close on £475,000! Quite a result and quite a result for the museum now that they have ALL the VC's from Gallipoli.

Captain Shout was some hero!

If you want to read about a ballsy Kiwi, try googling Capt Timothy Upham VC and Bar!

Great that the medals are staying where they belong. I read recently of at least one Ghurka, living in poverty in Nepal, thanks to UK government and MOD policies on pensions etc, saying that he would never sell his medal as to do so would demean the bravery and memory of his fellow soldiers.
