Dont get me wrong Ive had a blast over the last 10 years as an Avionics Engineer, seen the world (and the desert alot) - Currently writing software for the Typhoon, but the time has come to move on. To coin a phrase 'it aint like it used to be' :sad:

I am lucky enough to get my chance of my dream job, i'm leaving to train as an Airline Pilot with CTC.

I did laugh though when PSF/HR/Admin or what the :mad: they are called now said that as of 1st July the notice period for my trade had increased from 6 to 12 months. Like they have a chance of keeping me? Er no - not with the EU right of work law they won't!

Im going to relax now with a beer - today has been a good day :ok:

Nope. I'm too close to the pension to give up now! Three and a half years to do, but I aim to make the most of it and carry on seeing the world for free.

With some careful management I was able to start a new job with nearly six months remaining to my official exit date - deeply indebted to a thoroughly decent wg cdr who covered for me. PMA did try to shaft me with some rubbish temporary jobs but "duck and cover" worked beautifully. Good luck with CTC.

PS I've flown with quite a few ex-rankers who've transitioned successfully to the airlines.

I'd double check your info if I were you.

We had a lad in our section with 6 years left to serve of his contract PVR on the Monday and leave the RAF on the Friday into his new job recently, from a trade that doesn't have any planned redundancies.

There are exceptions and ways to get around what the 'official line' is and most decent employment lawyers can run rings around the MoD. Hell, we have major changes made to our working processes (such as JPA) without being invited to sign a new contract.

Good luck, Danny M. I'm leaving too, not on PVR, but leaving nonetheless. I remember sitting with my BFTS mates in YHOM arguing about who was going to be the Chief of the Air Staff first. Now all but 2 are wondering what's the quickest way out.

I am assuming you are a Fairy Chief. If so PMA f*cked up big style, they tried to change the PVR time from 6 to 12 months without telling anyone. Effective date of the change is now 1st August, check it out with PMA.

Also heard that PMA and DLS are running scared of someone challenging the published notice periods, and are unlikely to hold people who make a fuss.

Seriously - best of luck for the future. I too feel like leaving but, in all honesty, I haven't got the guts. A secure(ish) job with a reasonable income cannot be guaranteed on the outside and I haven't got the plums to take my chances. Fair play to those of you that do.

I dragged it out until I did 24 years and, generally, I wouldn't change one iota of it except for my last assessment when a plonker gave me a number I couldn't lose in the time remaining. So I left a bit annoyed - but still liking the service life.

Many of my colleagues were shocked at my PVR'ing, (Mrs Rigga too!) and some of them took that as a cue to do the same! In the end, it seems I was a bad influence?

All I really miss now is the social side of things. I get invited to a Mess Ball now and then, and enjoy what remains of the Mess. (Sad, eh!)

Managed to PVR under the 6 months notice rules, so didn’t need a EU challenge, just 7 more working days left now. Then the new life begins. After 27 years it will be a shock, but I’m no longer the wet-behind-the-ears boy of 1979 and very much ready to move on. I’ll get over it; after all you always do don’t you.
Had plenty of job offers and got a plum position, but it is not just about the money, it’s about quality of life. I have been part of something very special, we worked hard and people used to care and I am not about to become bitter and waste my memories. Know when its time to go and do so with good grace.

So what's this thing I had to sign when I (briefly) joined BA? Oh, it says "Contract of Employment". A copy of which I publicly tore up in front of my manager when I walked out a few years ago.

It wasn't worth the paper it was written on though.

When I left the RAF they were offering "get out of jail free cards" and as I had a mate who had a mate who wanted to employ me, I Walked into PSF on a Monday with a job offer in my hand, walked out with my clearance docs, spent the week getting them signed (and returned my bike to the Guardroom) and left the RAF on the Friday. I stated my job on the following Monday and haven't looked back since!

The grass can be greener but it can also be bl**dy hard work. Good luck in whatever you do.

You can seek action against all of the above at an employment tribunal. Not so the Armed Forces, who can only be taken to an employment tribunal over matters of sexual or racial harrassment.

I only found out this morning of the PMA f**K up, my PVR notice paper had 12 months notice period on it... it was the chief clerk that phoned my boss to pass on the good news!

The leaving date that I have applied for is the 30th November which is over 4 months away, there is no way that they will make me wait another 6/7 weeks to get out.
