Cape plane crash victim named
July 24 2006 at 01:34PM
The pilot killed when his light aircraft crashed on the Groenberg mountain range near Grabouw, Western Cape, on Sunday has been identified as Martin Kruger.
The 48-year-old man's body was only recovered on Monday morning after an intensive search by police and community members.
"Mr Kruger had apparently been to Worcester, and a son who was waiting for him at the landing field alerted police when he failed to return," provincial police Captain Elliot Sinyangana said.
"He also told police he had heard a plane approaching but could not see it due to dense mist and rain."
The wreckage of Kruger's plane was recovered 300 metres from the summit of Groenberg.
"The major part of the plane was completely burnt, except for the front portion," he said.
Sinyangana said an inquest docket had been registered. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) was in charge of the investigation. Earlier on Monday, CAA spokesman Moses Seate told Sapa that the plane crashed in bad weather conditions.
"But investigations will be conducted to ascertain the cause of the crash." - Sapa
