Etihad Airways, the UAE’s national airline, is to fly daily non-stop from Abu Dhabi to JFK New York Terminal 4 from 26 October 2006. The airline already has a three times a week service to Toronto, via Brussels. Flight time is around 14 hours, the service one of a series of introductions from the Gulf area bypassing Heathrow. The new route will be flown by a three-class Airbus A340-500. Trade between the United States and the UAE amounted to $10 bn in 2005, making it the second-largest US trading partner in the GCC behind Saudi Arabia. There are also more than 500 American companies in the UAE which are set to benefit from Etihad’s daily service.

The EY flight is supposed to arrive in JFK after 20:00 which means almost no immediate onward connections to anywhere in the US. So either they are aiming for all local passengers, or their STPC costs will be sky-high.

These slots are just the beginning. Hopefully new slots will provide an earlier arrival enabling passengers to connect with other onward flights. Management will be happy with this news if not to match EK in such a short time.
I haven't look into the acft performance charts or fuel plan requirements but an early afternoon Summer take off with full tanks (???) may push aside a bit of payload. Just gessing here for the moment. I may be wrong.
Obviously, if the slots aren't earlier it will be publicity exercise with one plus. General air cargo shipments will definitely benefit from these flights and will enable the courier companies to buy hold space for their premium services.

You will find EK operates the -500 with 204/42/12 config and MZFW of 229tons/ MTOW 375 tons.
On this route you are never limited by performance as a typical flighttime westbound will be 13:30 to 14:30 (winter) and coming back 12:45-12:00(winter), no matter how bloody hot it is on Departure.. Enormous FLEX range..This trip is in the heart of the enveloppe. Flightimes over 16hrs will get payload restricted eventually.
I guess SQ is not restricted on their LAX sector, as they are operating at only 182 seats and lower MZFW. (..and thats the way it should be done to avoid PAX stabbing each other, but different topic)
EK is not happy with the plane /engines RR- many problems (fuel system/IFE). Compared to a 777-300ER or -200LR it uses about 25% more fuel.
PS: US ATC often calls EK "United Emirates"...avoiding the middle word.
Wish you fun!
