I heard today that ANZ is withdrawing its AKL-SIN service,
seems like a bit of a shame, any one know any more info?

Would it have something to do with competing with SQ ?

Speculation in the Fin Review this morning they were also looking at leasing out a couple of their -400s in light of the A380 delays.

They anticipate strong demand for these airframes. Not sure if it's wet or dry?

Well, they are going to be running the 777 on the AKL-LAX-LONDON route now and I think the AKL-HKG-LONDON too, so they must have plans for the 400's!

No, the -400 is doing AKL-HKG-LHR

The Singapore route was shared with SIA and NZ were only getting 30%, so it wise to now send them across the pacific where they will return more, pax for Singapore can still fly on SIA code share or via HKG. Accountants decision, dollars and cents with no sense.

Sport would you care to explain why you think this decision makes no sense?

I can see why pulling out of SIN makes sense for ANZ. Unlike QF they don't go beyond SIN, most of the QF pax to SIN are going somewhere else (either on QF, BA or a codeshare) not staying in SIN. Also QF uplifts a large ammount of freight to SIN and maybe ANZ doesn't do this. Just my thoughts.

By pulling out it puts NZ in a bad light, you should never sink where it is possible to tread water, once you drown you are gone for good. NZ had developed a market albeit a small one and possibly not all that profitable but definitely one with a potential for growth. If there was a need for the 777 to go onto a nother route which has the potential to be more profitable then return the 767 to SIN/AKL/SIN that was holding its own. It doesnt make sense 'TO ME'.

According to the company blurb that route has not returned a profit for almost 7 years. So how long do think a company should keep running at a loss on a route before they pull out?
The 777 was put onto the route in place of the B767 as the 76 is no longer an acceptable product when competing with full IFE aircraft on that route, so there is no way the B767 will ever sent that way again.
The company has stated publicly that any route that does not return positive cash flow to the group will be culled; With Jet fuel approaching $100 a barrel I think there will be a few more ports culled soon!

[quote=Silberfuchs]Interesting that ANZ see HKG-LON as a viable route....as its already serviced daily by 4xCathay, 2xBA & 2xVirgin now also Oasis HKG-LGW.

Yes......... but no STAR alliance....... yet

HKG - LON also daily QF as well. Took a long time for the loads to build up on this route, but they seem quite healthy now.
