View Full Version : Fuselage on Trailer

Diving home last night (about 7pm), A23 through Crawley, was a fuselage being towed on a trailer. Mostly intact but corroded with the engine still in place. The engine was a "V" configuration with most of the rocker covers gone.

My initial thoughts were Spitfire. Does anyone have any clues?

There are several P-40s in Sussex/Surrey area that have been recovered from Russia - could be candidates?

The plot thickens! The rest of the airframe is on the move!
Last Saturday, exactly the same place I saw the fuselage (and at about the same time!) was a trailer full of what looked like the flying surfaces. Didn't get a good look again, he's always been travelling in the opposite direction!

Which way was he heading?

He was heading North from Crawley on the A23 towards Gatwick. I spotted him at a set of traffic lights at the County Oak Retail Park.

Could very well be going here, a very interesting collection and not over-exposed - good for wallowing in nostalgia and better days.

As a memeber of GAM I can tell you that the airframe was not coming to us.
Be most interested to know what and where it was going though!
Oh, and thanks for the link and kind words about our little hobby.

Some years ago on the M25 I saw a Bristol F2b fuselage being taken anti-clockwise. I emailed Aeroplane Monthly and they, at that time, didn't know of the move, but told me the likely candidate. Give them a try.
