Hi all,

I have been offered an interview to work in ops for a cargo airline and have been told to make sure that I know all about Overland Flight Permits.
As I don't have much experience in this department I was wondering if those of you in the know could explain them in a bit more detail. For example what is the process of obtaining them for a specific flight etc.
I have tried to find out by searches on the net but can't seem to find anything of much use.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Cheers.:ok:

I work on obtaining o/f and landing permits for an American B757/767 operator. We do a lot of charter - holiday type - flying and a lot of flying on behalf of the military.
One of the best resources is the Jeppesen "Entry Requirements" directory. Check out their site for a web-based subscritption. It lists the fax numbers / AFTN/SITA addresses to send requests to and just what to expect and what is expected of you as an operator.

PM me if you have any q's

Well it's a few years since I did it but the CAA 'purple' publication is an idiot's guide to applying overfights, I can't recall the purple's publication number though.

But if you're a pilot then why are you 'stealing' an Ops job from someone who may be already qualified and desperately need that job. You obviously do not have the experience for the Ops job thus should all Ops guys apply for pilot positions that they are also not experienced for?

Nothing wrong with a pilot wanting to work in OPS. That way, they get to see first hand how demanding the job can be (at times) and then think twice about kicking off when things go wrong !

Hey, thanks for that Phileas you know I never thought of it that way. It seems that you can always be trusted to give clarity to a matter ( or quote an old Flying Pickets song :yuk: !) on your postings.:D

Well, here is something for you to chew on. I do have a CPL/IR and wouldn't have to be applying for a position in operations if I could get a flying job. However, I have heard of many people working in airline ops over the years who now fly ( effectively, you say taking the position from someone who is more qualified )

In my normal 9-5 office job in employment law I have had to recently train up someone from India ( for 6 months ) who has proceeded to take my work back to his country. He didn't have any experience in my job role before he applied and took my job. Hence, why I am now redundant. Obviously the reason is that he is paid a tenth of what I used to earn.

So, thanks for your comments and as a result I have decided not to go to the interview now. It really has been a dire year so far and I have lost a lot of confidence in myself as a result of what has happened in my previous job.

From now on I hope to see you commenting on any postings on PPRUNE that have ops guys wanting to work as commercial pilots, taking jobs from the 'qualified' guys.:=

You should have gone to the i/v mate. A jobs a job and bills need to be paid.
