Wow, that's interesting, I am just sitting in Las Mercedes Hotel right across from the Managua Airport. Must have happened on Sunday.
The article basically says:
An Arrow Airlines cargo jet arriving from Miami, transporting 110,000 pounds (50 Tons) of toxic material suffered an accident without creating victims.
The accident occured at 5:10 am local time and the aircraft suffered a rupture in the left wing when it left the 2400 meter long runway.
The aircraft carried on 350 meters from the runway, after breaking through a fence and came to a stop close to a road.
The rupture of the left wing caused a fuel leak which was contained by the fire department to avoid fire or explosion.
The toxic materials carried on board did not leak.
According to Alfredo Chamorro, director of the airport, the aircraft could not turn or stop, it appeared that the breaks failed.
"Saved by God", is the only explanation that airport authorities gave, given that the left wing of the aircraft came to rest only a few centimeters from an electric transformer. Contact with the transformer, combined with the fuel leak, would have caused a gigantic explosion
“Los primeros afectados habrían sido los miembros de la tripulación y luego todo lo que hubiera estado cerca del aeropuerto”, murmuraban oficiales de la Fuerza Aérea, pero “gracias a Dios no hubo pérdidas humanas”, exclamó el gerente del aeropuerto, quien narró que lo primero que hicieron fue salvar la vida de los tripulantes.
The Captain is identified as Matius Cachester, the Copilot is Alonso Henry, and Flight Engineer Lázaro Vega.
The airline operated flights between Miami and Managua 3 times a week.
Normal operations were resumed at 10:30 am, however, American Airlines cancelled their flights for the rest of the day as a precaution.
