Stolen planes land

LIFE-size models of fighter jets :hmm: believed stolen from a Top End war memorial have been found safe _ at a Darwin sign company where they had been taken for repairs.

Miscommunication between Territory Government departments is believed to have caused the panic, leading to a formal police investigation into the so-called theft.

The Sunday Territorian reported yesterday that the three aluminium fighter planes had been taken from the Strauss Airstrip war memorial without the knowledge of the Department of Natural Resources, Environment and the Arts _ the department responsible for the heritage listed site.

The Sunday Territorian was alerted to the suspected theft by both the Department of Natural Resources, Environment and the Arts and independent member for Nelson, Gerry Wood.

Police confirmed they were investigating the apparent theft.

The planes were put up last August to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II. They were taken to Signtech late last week for repairs.

The Department of Planning and Infrastructure removed the planes. Spokeswoman Shannon Miskelly said the removal of the planes was a safety issue.

``We were made aware that there were safety concerns with the edges and the fixtures of the planes.

``The planes were removed temporarily so a timber backing could be applied to reduce the risk of people injuring themselves,'' she said.

Mr Wood said it was ``good news'' that the signs hadn't been stolen: ``Perhaps this was a case of the departmental ``left hand`` not knowing what the departmental ``right hand'' was doing.''

The planes will be returned to the Strauss Airstrip today.
