I have MS Word standing alone on my PC having been brought forward from a previous PC. I have no CD with it on. My new Dell laptop came with MS Works which seems to contain a poor man's version of Word called Wordpad.

Is there any way I can copy MS Word across from my PC to my laptop? If so, could some kind person please explain quite simply how to go about this.

PC Dell Dimension Win xp Home with CD reader and burner.
Laptop Dell 630M Win xp Home with CD reader and writer.
Both have plenty of memory and USB2 Ports.

Why not download openoffice (www.openoffice.org) as it will recognise .doc documents.
Oh! and personally I'd dump M$ works.

There is no way to do that - even legally! ;)

Go opensource, my Sun :ok:

Agree with the others - Go for OpenOffice - http://www.openoffice.org/

Brilliant completely free full Office Suite with good MS Office compatibility.

If you just want a word-processor then Abiword - http://www.abisource.com/ - is another excellent free (open source) word processor. In some ways I prefer it to OpenOffice - it has a whole string of downloadable plugins for import/export and tools to extend functionality.

You're about to discover that there ARE alternatives to Microsoft's buggy, bloated, expensive, monopolistic and money-gouging software.....

:ok:

PS: Metapad - http://www.liquidninja.com/metapad/ is a first-class replacement for Notepad with a great deal more functionality.

My kid got a new computer with OpenOffice on it.

She did try to use it, for several days, really try, but then came to ask me for a copy of the proper Office.

Knowing your prejudices Gertrude, that comment wasn't unexpected.

If my computer-nitwit wife can use OOo quite happily then your kid must have some problems....:(

Always popping up to diss anything that doesn't come out of Redmond ain'tcha?

:ok:

Oh and BTW, where did your kid get a new computer with OpenOffice on it?
Don't know any distributors who do that. I think I detect a whiff of TROLL!
