Computer / Internet Forum Guidelines

Here's a brief guide to help you get the most out of the forum, without incurring the wrath of the Mods and Admins!

The principal purpose of this forum is to keep aviation professionals from being driven insane by the quirks of modern technology, and to help them keep in touch with like-minded individuals through the medium of the interweb thingy.

Others are also welcome to join in the general fun and post similar cries for help, render assistance to the needy, have a good moan and gripe etc. etc.

This forum is NOT a place to enquire about circumvention of copyright (even MS products) - any such posts will rapidly be deleted and the culprits hung, drawn and quartered.

There's a sub-forum called "PPRuNe Problems or Queries" which is for problems related to the site itself - it's to be found towards the top of the main C&I forum, above the thread list. Internet Brands admins will have a watching brief over the sub-forum, so will pick up your posts.

Using the forum to promote one's own website, products or services - either directly or indirectly - is also strictly forbidden, unless with prior consent. If you wish to ask the site owners permission to post a link to your own site, please contact admin - use the "Contact Us" link in the blue bar at the bottom of the page. See punishment outlined in paragraph 4 above.

This isn't just me gone power crazy - this is PPRuNe policy.

Finally, an important note on Stickies:

There is a very limited number of Stickies available at any one time, and usually more deserving candidates than Sticky slots. My illustrious predecessor EVO came up with an elegant solution - place a permanent Sticky titled "Frequently Asked Questions" at the top of the forum, into which links to "Sticky" threads are then posted. I propose to maintain this policy, so threads will be made Sticky by popular demand, then a link placed in the FAQ thread when "Unstuck".

Enjoy the forum, and thanks for your contributions! :ok:

Posting Links to Websites - A Clarification.
All,

There have been a lot of instances recently of self-promotion of websites, (both subtle and blatant).

The key word here is "Self".

This is not permitted, and - at the very least - the links will be removed from posts. Threads may be deleted and UserIDs banned for persistent attempts to self-promote.

However, there is no problem with people posting links to websites where the poster has no interest or involvement with the company in question - how would we ever render assistance to the needy otherwise?
(note - this is not an absolute and binding definition, common sense applies)

It is possible that a moderator might - occasionally - have to step in if someone overstepped the mark regarding promotion, but I don't recall ever seeing this - except where the promotion was for their own site, product or service.

I recently uncovered a user from Australia who had registered 26 user IDs over a 4-year period on PPRuNe, for the sole purpose of dishonestly promoting his website and services. Needless to say I am not particularly disposed to be tolerant of any such self-promotion!
