Just wondering what people think.

my argument is that the globe is round.
JFK is 40.38N 73.46W
HKG is 22.20N 114.11E

so it is shorter to fly east bound from hk to nyc.
but the shortest distance (great circle) is via north pole-ish.

so... is New York east or west of HK?

I think for ease of explaining to the average Joe you would say NY is east of HK (about 172 degrees longitude). West would be about 188 degrees longitude. If we were to say it was north (shortest distance) this wouldn’t hold true either once you passed the pole.

thanks.

To clarify. so a professional pilot would say New york is north east east of Hong Kong?

He would probably say it is a long way from Hong Kong.

I would probably say that that's a b.s. question that doesn't need to be asked.

I wasn't really saying that the question itself wasn't asked, just saying that it's a stupid question that needs to be rephrased.

A stupid question?
There are no stupid questions. There are only stupid people who thinks they are too smart for questions. :hmm:
I say North-East. Relative positions should be defined by differences in Longitude/Latitude.

Well, HK is in "The East"...so that makes NY More Easter-er.

Could also be Far-er East or Far Easter-er.

But if we take HK as the start point, then we all know that NY is more Westerner.

Got it....Great :ok:

To Taiwan, expect the Ocean departure from HKG then the Tonga RNAV arrival to TPE.

I think NY depends on the wind.
