Hi All Candidates,
Like most of you, I am an enthusiast of flying and really want to make it into a lifelong career. Like many, I have been applying with Dragonair in the last 3 years and heard nothing. Over the past 3 years, I have improved my academic qualifications and I have achieved my UK JAA PPL with an average score of 93% in all ground school exams with flight radio licence. Before that I have achieved many team sport medals and certificates. I had experience serving the public as a full-time swimming pool life-guard at Discovery bay, HK. I don't feel I am getting the same respect as from other companies. In UK, we play on the rules. Airliners set up the short-listing criteria, whoever make it will be asked to come forward. If there are too many applicants, they will apply the extra desirable criteria which they also published to minimise the number of candidates to come forward. So that we all will have a clear idea of will make it through or not. Previously, I saw the line written " Dragonair will not ENTERTAIN any telephone enquires!" and I feel whoever written this was very impolite (rude) and I never ever seen this appears on any other companies web page before. We all know they are busy but there is better way to indicate this. I heard many good news about the flying part of Dragonair and I am not denying I really really want to work for them. But, well..what else can you do more? Last but not least, airliners promote teamwork spirit. I am here to appeal for some help on my survey. I know this is not a problem that will be interested by the ones who already getting through, but I really want to find out what make a candidate to get an invitation. Thanks for taking part and I still think assessment is the only true way to identify you have: Good English, good maths skill, good reasoning skills, good hands and eyes co-ordination skills BUT NOT simply determine from the application form and destroying the applications data. I was sitting at round one of FlyBE UK sponsorship test and there were nearly 300 candidates sitting in a large hall doing the Maths, Physics, reasoning paper based test. Then reduced to 30 to do hands and eyes co-ordination tests. This is a much fairer system to locate the best candidates. K3nnyBoy, I feel very much like you. Here is my background and age!
Age:33 (Still good for 22 years of service)
Degree: Yes, Engineering (2:1 Hons)
Post-graduate Degree: Yes, Engineering
Oversea now: Yes (UK)
Number of Flying hours: 55
I look forward to hearing from you all. :ok:

interesting post you got there mate~i actually started sending in my resume back in 2004 even though there wasn't any recruitments back then, but i still posted in my cover letter and everything else they need. waited as usual, no replies. In December 2005 saw sent in my resume to CX and KA at the same time, got a reply from CX in a month time, but still no news fm KA.....the interesting part is since they "had" :
" Dragonair will not ENTERTAIN any telephone enquires!"
on the KA web-site, they also provided:
All enquiries should be directed to [email protected]
so e-mailed them to run a check for my application, got no replies. They even removed the e-mail contacts on the web-site now! Think I probably sent them too much e-mail and they got annoyed at me:rolleyes: but I'm sure this is what anyone of you would do if you're in my position. I'm just the same as everyone else here who is really desperate for a job in the airlines!:E
Age: early 20's
Degree: No (got nothing, but working hard for a diploma in aviation)
Oversea: YES (Australia, but now in HK for CX CPP interview)
Hours: approx 200 total (just got my Aussie CPL in Feb 06)
Anyway good luck to all of you guys hope to see you guys in the flight deck one day! cheers~~:ok:

P.S----Minimum, i'm sure the CPP interview is in English...but if you managed to log on to this site and typing...mate, you've done some homework.....taking a step closering already! So don't worry about whether the interview in Chinese or English. cheers~~

hi guys

i sent in my app in early dec and re-send again in march, than only got a call from them at the end of march, anyway i am still in the selection process.
but my frend which is at AUS also sent his app, heard no reply, it does seem like very unfair to others, and i know that if u are not selected, you will not get any rejection letter like cx.
seems like the persons working in the HR department needs some improvements on their selection process.

I agree. KA's selection process is just diabolical. I understand they dun wanna waste their limited resources on replying emails n phonecalls. However a standardised rejection/acknowledgement email c.c to all the failed candidates once a month wudnt kill them I reckon.
Invest in people is the key for most successful companies and it starts right in HR. I wonder how they allowed their HR become (or always has been?) such a shamble.

First of all, thanks for the reply and contribution from K3nnyboy, Minimums, bigbros and cfdwhizkid. It is good to know that I am not the only one who suffer from such poor human resource management. Anyone of you will agree that Cathay winning miles away in dealing with CPP applications. As cfdwhizkid said, they (Dragonair) may have limited resources and I have sympathy with that. But for such a professional position (pilot), should we have some kind of respect and at least a standard letter saying "Thank you for your interest with Dragonair...and you are succeed / not succeed to the next round." To be honest, I do not know how Christine Chan the General Manager allowing someone putting the sentence "Dragonair will not ENTERTAIN any telephone enquires." on their web site. Then I was writing to their recruit.crew e-mail address and someone reply with a sentence "Thank you for your interestED". To all potential pilots here, how do you feel if such poor English level people dealing with your application forms?
Minimums, I was asking a friend of mine few months ago who is flying for Dragonair and he said that it is not compulsory to be able to speak in Mandarin, not sure for Cantonese.
Dragonair seems to be excluding the people from overseas to suit their schedule. Also candidates with flying hours.
Good luck to those selected for the next round and enjoy the flying career :)

HI Guys~~
I have been studing in Australia(Hobart) for year and half.I am studing at college in year11 now,so my english is not that good yet/_\...i want to apply HK CX CPP interview when i finish college.
Can someone suggest me what to do??
because i am afraid of my medical test:( ...i got shortsight +600,i heard many opinions, someone said it will be fine and my mum heard that polit could not have shortsight on the HKradio.so i am really worry about that:{ .
I am studing physical science in year11,and i am gonna stude chemistry or physic, maybe both of those, is it good for me to apply CX CPP??
actually i want to be a pharmacist in the future, that's why i am studing science, but i think maybe pilot is more suitable for me.
and i wanna know how good english i need to get into the interview??
i just wanna ask those questions.:)

i hope u guys don't mind to read my bad writing:O .
Cheers!!!:ok:

24th Apr 2006, 18:23
guess i'm not really in a position to advise you..tho based on things i read in diff forums and CX's website, I can assure u they do take on shortsighted ppl as long as it can b corrected (not quite sure if +600 is alrite for them tho, I'm sure some other will be able to advise u on that soon).

With regards to what subject u shud study, physics and maths is definitely a plus as flying a plane requires a fair bit of knowledge in flight mechanics and aerodynamics. Having said that, what pilots know abt flight mechanics and aerodynamics is only superficial, nothing involves complicated maths like partial differential equations or Navier Stokes equation.

N son, if u do get an interview, dun ever tell them u actually want to be a pharmacist...

Ur english... well u're not the worst however i think u do need to brush it up a bit (u need to pass an english listening, as well as a grammar test in the first stage of the selection process)...afterall u dun wanna sound like a Hongkie during the interview...mind u, some local pilots do speak english in an awful HK accent... as long as u can communicate with ur colleague n ATC then it's fine i suppose...

So make sure this is what you wanna do and just fill in the application form in ur own handwriting (which is a pain in the **** btw) and send it off.

Just a quick reply. You should contact HKCAD for their medical requirement. Better find it out now than late. I can tell you here the UK standard is as follow:

No more than 5.0 shortsighted
The differences between the two eyes not more than 2.0

Some countries are slightly more relax than the others. Remember it is important for you to find it out from the most appropriate department if you really want to make flying as your lifelong career.

thanks for ur opinions~~:D
i am trying to improve my english better in anytime.:)
and i want to ask, how many CPP interview(s)does CX have each year??
what do you reckon how many people are going to the interview??
and how many people will be selected to go to australia for the flight trainning??

thanks for ur help~~:ok: vbmenu_register("postmenu_2539603", true);

cfdwhizkid

I'm really not sure how many CPP interviews they're holding each year.. it really depends.. As for this year, I've heard ppl going in for interviews (first 2 stages) in April, May and Jul... not sure abt Jan-Mar, and Jul onwards (HR told me there's no fixed schedule yet for after Jul)

Another source told me there's gonna be 2 batch of cadets goin to Adelaide this year (Aug n Oct)

As to how many ppl are selected for the interview.. i really dunno... they have all walks of life going to the interview tho.. n how many actually are selected to the flight training.. I'm sure some other who's been will tell u that... or, wish me luck and I'll ask for u in my interview lol

The number of people attending the interview; the schedule for the interview and number of people goin to Australia are all depending on the candidates, every year is different.
regarding your medical, hmm...im not sure how true this rumour is, but i heard that someone with 600 (or something) made it into the training, well...i personally have a short-sightness of 350, and CX still offer me a chance for interview.
Well, your english doesn't sound too bad, as someone mentioned earlier on as long as you could communicate with people you'll be fine, plus you're only in year 11 anyway, at the moment you should focus more on your year 12...and make sure you don't stuff it up like i did.:E

Good Luck with everything~~

P.S: forgot to mention that KA finally sent me a reply for my email. Gonna b doing my initial test on the 18th May, anyone up for that?

I have been to the initial test of KA in mid-March, and the second test at early April. They have recently invited me to the first interview in end-April.

Really have no idea how many cadets KA are going to take this year. The selection process for stage 1 & stage 2 seems to be keep going in these months. Just wonder if anyone here has passed the 1st interview and receive further invitation?

K3nnyboy, the numeric test of KA is not something very difficult, but tedious. One advice is, instead of calculating the results one by one, try using some smart way to tackle them faster. It's in some way relates to your sense to numbers. :)

Hours: approx 200 total (just got my Aussie CPL in Feb 06)

Is CX so desperate to interview pilots with NO experience??

K3nnyboy
4th May 2006, 11:36
y not?
in fact the cadetship are design for people with no flying experience!

Lowspirited
4th May 2006, 17:11
hehe... Well although the cadet programme was designed for people with no flying experience i think some knowledge of flying would be useful. I remember i was quite shocked when stall training is one of the earliest training you complete after simple handling. Some people might get quite sick during a stall which could render their chance as a pilot near zero... After all passengers might get scared if the pilot turns green :p

smart way? hmm need more details....of course im not tellin u to give me teh answer, but im kind of confuse with wat you are saying~

flaps340
8th May 2006, 01:20
Smart way...say, for multiplying a series of numbers to compare different answers, try listing the series out and observe instead of multiplying the chain of numbers at the first time. In some of the questions, you can easily pick the answer/erase some options with this way. Hope you know what I mean.

bigbros. Do you know if KA has started calling people who have passed the 1st interview, or do you get any news so far? I have the interview one day after yours and have no news so far.

For the previous two tests, they replied in a rather short time (only about a week) even they said they will reply by one to two weeks after the test. So this time, even they said it'll be three weeks, just wonder if it will be shorter.
