View Full Version : Do We Need a Male/Female Indicator?

acbus1
5th Apr 2006, 07:04
Twice in the last couple of weeks, I've been informed that I've assumed someone to be the opposite of their actual gender.

In one case, the legibility of the "giveaway" personal title was nothing short of appalling, in the other case, there was no indication.

Can we have a show of hands, please, from those who would like to see gender as a compulsory part of the-little-box-to-the-left-of-one's-post?

Otherwise, I take no further responsibility for getting it wrong. :p

I agree.
All the ladies should post pics of their naughty bits so we know for sure.:}
The rest of us must be men.....simple aint it.

Whirlygig
5th Apr 2006, 07:13
No, it shouldn't be compulsory; just like or date of birth or location or interests.

I think it's screamingly obvious from the way I write which gender I am but if someone gets it wrong, I don't take offence. I'll set the record straight but no harm or upset is caused!!

So acbus1, nobody should berate you for getting it wrong and neither should you feel guilty! I remember I got it frighteningly wrong when I first joined and made an invalid assumption about a moderator! The world and his wife very kindly put me right on that one! Said lady in question didn't bat an eyelid!

Cheers

Now does anyone know where I left my off-the-shoulder chamois leather 'y' fronts?!! :E

No, no. Coming from Eastern bloc, no... What we do is learn liberties, with all the associated hazards, and all of a suden there is many strange rules. At the end of the day all of us learn to be careful and I say: Do not spoil the place. Let's keep us professional ...

BlueDiamond
5th Apr 2006, 10:02
Definitely not. Those who prefer to advertise their gender are free to do so by choosing a log-on containing words that give a clue. Those of us who don't give a rats whether we're debating with/responding to men or women wouldn't really care if people got it wrong as far as our own gender was concerned.

It's not that simple - have to be a 'don't know/undecided' indicator as well.

ALL we need is a thumbnail of the person's photo so that you know which one you're reading/addressing.
Sorted!

BTW are talking male/female GENDER or SEX? (Not necessarily the same . . . )

Gort
5th Apr 2006, 14:19
Why would you need something like that acbus? So you can display some more of that outrageous wit and letching? Who gives a damn what sex somebody is on this forum. Does it give them any more credence or bragging rights, just like your precious post count you are always on about?

I think it should be law for certain people to wear signs declaring what gender they are, so then people like acbus will not be confused.

IRELAND, not Scotland, not Wales, and DEFINITELY NOT ENGLAND!!!

Where does one get an IQ?
Will it be issued with my ID card?

Gort
5th Apr 2006, 14:37
You may think I'm an idiot Jericho, but I stand by what I have posted. Why should some people who enjoy reading what has been posted on this forum have to put up with some of the suggestiveness and bullcrap like 'Let us find out what sex people are so we can letch'. Look at some of the stuff that has been posted on the photo thread. Any wonder some of the pictures have been removed. Like flies on a dungheap.
Maybe I do need to lighten up a bit but you cannot tell me I am wrong.

Maybe an IQ indicator as wellawwwwwwwwwww:{:{ Jerricho they won't have a "thick as two planks" IQ indicator that applies to me.
If anyone wants to call me a male! Well then they can't read my profile properly, yes I do have long legs in trousers and short hair which may indicate from the rear I may be one but the rest of me tells a different story.:O
I don't get upset if I have been mistaken for the opposite sex!! it makes me laugh from what I type I have to be a woman (I talk way to much to be anything else!):p
besides there are those on here who know me personally and can vouch for my sex!;)

Whirlygig
5th Apr 2006, 14:49
Isn't the IQ indicator the reciprocal of JB post counts?

Or in some cases, maybe not!

I will say in defence of acbus (why I'm doing this Lawd only knows) that he didn't imply he wanted to know the sex of ppruners to lech (sic) but in order not to make a prat of himself when he got it wrong.

As we all have, haven't we eh?, captwannabe!

Er, no, that wuz me--and I was deeply hurt:{ :E . I don't qualify for Jerricho's IQ test as I was officialy informed I was thick--by a certain "manager" in a certain airline--which he was by the way. Posting a piccie of me, well that would not really be a good idea. Being modest, shy and retiring, the problem woud be that, as possibly the finest combination of physique, intellect, sexual aurora and prowess ever to grace the planet--others may feel disadvantaged here. True, not everybody ( about 99.999999 % of the populations to be exact) share the above view :hmm: --but you can't please everybody now can you. ;)

Given that I don't take life, in the main, that seriously ( even my handle is a piss take for gawds sake :p ) maybe acbus needs to get out more ! ;) :D

When I started Ppruning a few years ago, I had a "gender neutral" pprune name, which I think is in the minority for the female posters on here - most of us girls have a name that suggests we're female (Aerbabe is a good example).

Anyway, as a result, everyone assumed I was a bloke and I thought that was interesting, so I didn't enlighten them. At the time there were a number of homophobic ranty threads (remember Capt Ed?) and, being a bit of a huggy fluff, I waded in fairly frequently. The result was more than a few of the posters assuming that I was a gay man - (I never said I was male, merely didn't point out that I was female) - so obviously something about the way I posted was slightly "feminine" (or effeminate???::confused: ) Some of the responses were quite hostile, so either it was a bit of homophobia on the part of those who were convinced I was a gay man (no, wait, maybe it's because I confessed to being a lawyer:O !!)

Computer system I'm working on has 'Male'/'Female'/'Unknown' as valid values for sex.

Surely it should be 'Yes Please'/'Ive got a Headache'/'Buy me a few drinks first'?

Must go and raise a problem report.

Problem with using the term gender. That has three states - masculine, feminine and neuter. Not volunteering for that one !!

Could we use the proper term - which is sex !!

A mate of mine had an encounter with a mahu in a Papeete bar once. He was French and arguably better looking than I so I wasn't very surprised that they 'hit it off' and I felt a little excluded.
