I just re-graded from a 1 meg service to an "up to 8 meg" it turns out I've got 1.9 meg.

now BT claim that 78% of BT lines are expected to manage 4Mbps or faster, 6Mbps to around 42%.

I certainly wasn't expecting to achieve 8meg but I'm not even achieving 2Mbps. Has anyone else tried out similar products and what speed did you actually get?

Have a look at http://www.bethere.co.uk/

With ADSL2+ in theory you can get 24 meg, in practice no one gets it. I've got 17 with the highest I know of being about 20, and it can be as low as 2. Totally dependant on a number of factors - distance to exchange and line quality being the most important.

Exactly the same with ADSL but only up to 8 meg, so I'd guess either you are a long way from your local exchange or you have a lousy line (lots of noise etc.)

And there is also the small matter of contention, I believe... :(

Hmm the thick plottens.

My speed has gone DOWN now to just over 1 meg. However it seems that whatever BT says about "activation" it actually takes the clever gizmo (fat bloke with a spanner) at the exchange several days to figure out how much your line can take and then start pumping, as it were. In the meantime ones speed may fluctuate wildly.

We shall see what happens.

I find lots of so called speed test sites struggle with a reading for high speed connections and give various results. Try a test from This (http://www.giganews.com/test_connect.html) link and see what that says
