Red Yeast Rice vs Cholesterol

Has anyone had any first-hand experience of using red yeast rice for lowering cholesterol? I have read a bit on the internet, but most of it seems to be 5 or 6 years old. The FDA have banned it over here relatively recently, but not for particularily negative reasons as far as I can make out. I don't really trust them anyway as they also ban Irn Bru :hmm:

I'd be interested to learn more about red yeast rice if anyone knows anything.
