I will try and answer your questions accurately, but it is quite late here in Dubai and I am just off to bed, but here goes...

The meal allowance is only just enough to satisfy your requirements whilst away, that is what it has been designed to do. It will not supplement your income in any way at all. The average daily allowance is between US$70 and US$100, that is for a 24 hour period. It is not enough.

Education support is provided. As I understand it, you are given Dhs10,000 and then 90% of the school fees above this. I have two kids in school, the fees are around Dhs8000 each per term. So my total schooling bill is Dhs48,000 (US$13,000) of which the company give me Dhs45,200 (US$12,300) so I am Dhs2600 (US$700) out of pocket each year. But that does not include any extras that you have to pay for, from uniforms and sports kits, to after school activities and trips. But that is me and the school that my kids go to is not the most expensive by a long way. Nursery / Kindergarten charges are your own responsibility as the allowance only applies from 5 years old.

To summarise, the trip alllowances are appalling and I am often digging into my pocket (credit card) to pay for things whilst away and the education allowance is ok for me, but others do suffer quite high costs above the allowance.

SecureID,

$70 to $100 a day for food? To be fair, are you working on a basis of "expensive restaurants with a bottle of wine"? or "to get similar to that which you have at home"?

I would expect to be able to get an evening meal for just over Dhs 100 ($30) in most of the area, in a quite reasonable restaurant (not McDonalds!) and I could find a hotel with meals for not much more than the "meal allowance that you quote, if I wanted to save a bit oif cash (and I don't mean a sleazy place)

And do you factor in what you would be paying for the groceries to feed yourself at home (and your cook and live-in maid if you have one?)

Come on, $100 or a bit under is realstically pretty reasonable as a "food" allowance isn't it? Not "knocking", but seriously questioning.

Or are you saying that "food allowance" should include an "inconvenience factor" for staying away from home comforts? Surely the salary (for any job that requres being away from home) should be where that is evaluated?

Went to Hong Kong the other day and was pleased that the Virgin crew took pity on my crappy allowances and bought me a beer. At LHR we get £55 a night which is not going to do very much for you in London. At other airlines, decent allowances are seen as a perk by the crew, that just isn't the case at EK but I guess we knew that when we joined.

Surely the salary (for any job that requres being away from home) should be where that is evaluated?

The allowances at EK just cover food and about the only time I have ever bought any money back is when I have been to Nairobi or Colombo. (I haven't been reduced to the pot noodles and kettle washing yet.) Most other companies that send their employees abroad to work compensate them more favourably for the trip.

P.S. ESG, the missus doesn't like being referred to as a cook and live in maid. What next bottle washer?

Cannot believe you complain about $70 to $100 meal allowance:ooh: . If you spent that on food and non-alc beverages per day you would need more A380's to carry the extra weight around. Must be a first expecting you company to pay for your booze when you are away:} . With little or minimun rest that you get when do you get a chance to drink in any case:bored: ????

i believe $70 to $100 a day is not bad after all for me. the company i work for
gives me .
1) $ 20 per flying hr ( average 70 hrs ) = $ 1400
2) $ 15 per sector ( avg 10 sectors) = $ 150
3) $ 2 meal all out of base ( avg 250 ) = $ 500
4) $ 2800 salary 5 yrs senior f/o.

do you guys think EK is beter?

most importantly none of us is happy. we're leaving one after the other.

I don't think you lot are for real... are you?
When he says 70 to 100 a day he means a working day not every bleedin' day and only on a long haul trip. Now lets say you do 4 LH tripswith a 24 hour layover thats 400 us and for all the SH trips you do to plug the gaps you get diddly squat, no flight pay, no hardship allowance , no nothing in fact.
If it was 100 us just for dinner then fine but most of us like a little breakfast and perhaps some lunch and believe me if it's the hotel in Dhaka you won't get $100 nor in the UK hotels, you'll get 60 to 90 quid in the UK. OK if you like MacD but I'm a little past that. The money they give you will cover the food you buy or if you choose to spend it on liquid refreshment then that too but not both, so for the 340-200 man i think you're nearly on the same cash, maybe just a touch less.

Take a look at the thread here (http://www.pprune.org/forums/showthread.php?t=219994) for the Actual EK Allowances.

Shakealeg is correct

Your going to lose weight and leave Weight Watchers and Jenny Craig in the dust on our Allowances.

Hey I like the name Demented...doesnt this mean Living In A Primitive State Of Neurotic Irresponsibility No way do we average $100 a night .....Guess you might though if your some what Demented......

Gulf Air Flight Safety Magazine years ago had a cartoon of three Gf L1011 flight deck skeletons in the cruise. The Captain was asking..
"What do you chaps think of the new meal allowances?"
These allowances only went up when a L1011 crew could not be called out in LHR in an emergency situation one morning as the Captain and the Flight Engineer were down the A4 in a transport Cafe uncontactable eating a combined evening meal come breakfast during their rest period.

Not only must EK pay for your booze now Shakealeg wants a hardship allowance......how hard is it to be picked up at home, driven to work, work in a new airconned office for a few hours, driven home and while you are at work you get fed.... . What is the salary supposed to cover?.....Oh! I remember that is for the hardship of living in the Middle East:eek: .

The ' Salary ' is for the responsibility of the job. ie, flying hundreds of people from A - B in one piece. Because you now end up in B but you'd rather be back home in A with your family, the company are obliged to provide food and board whilst you're staying in B. If we had to pay for food from our salary, then those that went on the longer trips and were more productive to the Company, would actually end up worse off !

On turnrounds we don't get a food 'allowance' as the Company provides food and beverage for us.

It's a shame that the downroute allowance doesn't cover for the odd 'drink' or two. That's why so many crew stay in and you never get the same feeling of teamwork amongst the CC that you'd normally get after a good night out.

Anyway, Demented, hope that explains it.

If you eat in the restaurant and purchase the meals the Indians in the office worked the numbers on, you might be able to survive on 55 GBP a day in London. Personally, I can never seem to fit it into the given allowances without skipping breakfast.

It might have something to do with the allowances taking into account the discount offered by the hotel but NOT the taxes or room service delivery fees applied.

The point I think some people are trying to make is very simple, demented and anyone else having trouble understanding:

You're away from home a LOT with EK. It'd be nice if wit weren't a miniscule allowance, calculated to the cent, literally, by some bean-counter (or lentil-counter in EK's case) that we have to exist on.

In some cases such as Sydney and Brisbane, the allowances are withheld for the second portion of the stay just in case you don't come back from wherever to the hotel. God forbid they might pay out a few bucks they could've saved.

The point is people hate the feeling of being drip-fed starvation rations by a bunch of tight-arses with fists tighter than a fish's butthole or a nun's nasty or what have you.

A mate at Qantas has to buy me beers in Singapore after my paltry one-round allowance is exhausted because he is paid nearly 3x what I get for the same 24hr period.

The salary, well that's another thing. The whole idea used to be you get paid a lot more to put up with living a long way from home. But with such wonderful buildings to look at here, it is no longer so desirable to go back home one day and I don't mind sliding further and further behind the CPI, if there even is one here.

Why some people think it's fine to be butt-poled financially just for the privilege of being away from home is OKAY is simply beyond me.

:suspect: Demented (appropriate) and ESG...

You really think so? In South East Asia it would be considered a windfall, but in the UK/the Continent it's borderline woeful.

A meal for one (not necessarily with booze - a decent meal with fresh ingredients & veggies) can set you back 30-40 Euro or similarly in quid and that's just in a modest restaurant, not some five* joint (not that I'm looking for it). I wouldn't expect a Company to fund a lavish lifestyle, BUT at the same time I will not reduce myself to eating "junk food" and ruining MY health when the Company expects me to be in good health on a p1ss poor allowance. Plus who wants to eat the same old dishes in the same old hotels for petes sake... it's over 6 quid just to catch the tube into London and bleedin 40-50 quid to take a cab from LHR  And on the Continent? I don't even dare... cabbies just wanna fleece you :* At least in Europe one can walk.

Cod's right... so much for teamwork/comraderie these days... everyone stays in... how boring

Touchy bunch aren't you.......Life is unfair, get used to it. BaghDaddy, maybe you should go and live closer to home wherever that is, get 3X your EK allowance, save it to pay your taxes and then next time you run into a mate at EK get him to buy you a round.:E

so guys... does this mean that the A330 guys don't get allowance like the other fleets, or they're lucky they don't dig into their salaries to cover night stops since they don't have any lay overs ?
