Can anyone point me at anything on the web that gives an overview of how airport/airline IT typically works (at overview level) in bookings, check-in, boarding - anyting to do with passenger handling?

I realise that there are security implications in revealing details of actual systems, but that's not what I'm asking for. I'm only looking for information that is already in the public domain. I'm looking for this because I work in IT and the information would help me with a current task.

Quite understand if such systems are indeed secure and there's nothing published.

Take a look at Damarel's website (http://www.damarel.com/products/) and Navitaire's website (http://www.navitaire.com/res_and_dist/). They both supply the systems to which you are referring.
