United Airlines is to shed some 100 jobs in Sydney and Melbourne as it streamlines its operations.
The airline's ground-handling and reservation functions in the two cities would be outsourced, according to the ABC website.
United's Australasian general manager Stephen Pearce said the measure would build an efficient, consistent and cost-effective organisation.
United Airlines emerged from three years of bankruptcy in the United States in February. It has not made a profit in six years.
A spokeswoman for United parent UAL Corp, Jean Medina, told the Associated Press that annual costs had been reduced by $A9.5 billion and debt by $A17.6 billion through restructuring.
a sorry day for all working in the airline industry the good days have passed. not much to look forward to as these companys take over the jobs that we enjoyed doing for years. the level of service can only decline
