I seem to remember that there are two types of MS Windows Messenger- one good, and the other associated with spyware. Am I right?

There's the Messenger service, which is bad.
There's MSN Messenger - which is for IM / chat. Not as bad, but I prefer Trillian !

Yep - there has been a lot of confusion between the two in the past.
MSN messenger (usually just abbreviated to 'MSN') is very widely used - myself and a good number of other prooners use it to keep in touch with each other.

I tend to use This (http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/xp_mess_disable.htm) to remove windows messenger from the pc and just have MSN installed

Nice little touch on MSN 8.0 which I'm currently beta testing, is that you can send messages whilst appearing offline - great if you just want to chat to one person without all the other, welll meaning friends jumping in and saying 'Hi'!

Timcat, that sounds great, been waiting since Version 1.1 :8 for them to allow users to do that.
